I use natural cotton and stuff the cases as full as I can before firing them. Make sure you use cotton and not a synthetic batting. Synthetics will melt on the inside of the barrel. I use a small wooden dowel to pack the cases.

Don't forget to clean your barrel before actually shooting "live" rounds. Any packing material will leave "junk" in the barrel.

On my 243AI:
10gr of unique pistol powder in a primed case, fill the rest with cornmeal, plug with a small wad of toilet paper. Fire. You have moved your shoulder forward and started to create the sharp shoulder

That is all I did. You need to check and make sure it will re-chamber after neck sizing. I only FL sized after 3-4 firings.

I shot a match with an older gentleman who fireformed his 30/06 to 30/06AI while shooting the match! No cornflakes were harmed in fireforming his cases.

Re: Fire forming packers - Cream of wheat

I've never used any "packer" for fire forming and I have fire formed 22-250AI and 243AI. I've taken my standard loads to a prairie dog town and did some fire forming. Both calibers were still accurate to 400 yds. I would not trim the cases to a trim to length prior to fire forming, the case length will shrink once it is fire formed.

I to have Fire formed at matches. But if i can FF without barrel ware than thats the way I want to go. Will try this and see how it works for me.

What is the down side of this process? is the clean up after a pain in the ass?

Re: Fire forming packers - Cream of wheat

I fireformed 100 piece of 243 Ai today, got great accuracy a great time at the range and 100 rds of practice, it is not wearing the barrel to me, it is still shooting my rifle.

Re: Fire forming packers - Cream of wheat

MOST of the time when I'm fireforming, I'm starting out with 220 Russian and blowing them out to 6PPC. Without overboring a different chamber I have to use a filler.

Re: Fire forming packers - Cream of wheat

I understand why in very special circumstances of extreme case forming one may use fillers, most case forming does not require anything besides a bullet. I have seen this subject more than I can count on internet forums and it is always about 50/50. Google the subject and you will find some horror stories of ringed chambers and rifles turned smoothbore. A bullet and friction is not what wears out a barrel, shoot the bullet and eat your filler.
