fire forming

Re: fire forming

Depends upon the cartridge. Usually, 10 to 12 grains of a Unique speed powder, dropped into the case, and the case filled with "Cream of Wheat", then a thin over wheat wad of canning wax to hold everything in, will result in a 80 to 90 % formed case. Shoot it straight upwards. With a small to stiff breeze. Makes a mess if you do it indoors. The result will be close enough to use the case as a "work up" beginning.

Re: fire forming

Are you doing this with a wildcat? The cream of wheat method works great, or just shoot the standard round through your chamber, one firing on brass isn't enough to wear it down significantly (unless it's 30-30 or 22 Hornet or something). If you have a real barrel burner of a round (those that eat barrels in 1k rounds or less), my suspicion is that you are over your head and should be playing with other cartridges first to learn the fireforming process.

If you're just looking to neck size a standard case once you have it fireformed to your chamber, don't sweat it, just go shoot. You can usually even get your load dialed in to within a half a grain.

Re: fire forming

usually fire forming witha standard load can produce good accuracy, try a full load with bullet .005 in lands and see what you get, I have seen Fclass shooters fireforming brass at matches and doing really well. I have shot many 1/2 MOA groups making 243 AI brass with factory ammo.
hope this helps.

Re: fire forming

cream of wheat, and a little wax. OK, I'll try it. I do normally just shoot it, (6mmBR, 308, 223) but breaking in a box of 100 shells so I can get down to consistency is costing around $30 in bullets. will give it a fair shot. Thanks
