I'm by no means a gunsmith but I like to keep some sort of assortment of screws, nuts, bolts, tnuts, action screws, etc. for firearms. Is there somewhere I could find some or just start piecing my own together? I hope this question makes sense. if not, I can try and clarify

thanks hide

There's screw kits on midway / Brownells. They have a pile of rail screws and the like, however fishing tackle box trays work well for loose screws you collect over the years, if you "build your own".

This might be a good start. Even if this particular kit isn’t quite right, there are others.

I didn't plan to, however I now have thousands of firearm fastners, nuts, t-nuts, roll pins / split pins, washers in all the gunsmith gauge diameters, etc. Nothing as aggravating as working on a project and not having the correct hardware to assemble the parts professionally.

I would recommend McMaster Carr for virtually all of your fastener needs; you can get 25-100 pieces (a non-commercial life times worth) of whatever for what usually you pay for 3-5 pieces elsewhere. I have purchased all the gun screw kits from Brownells, their blank screw set (i.e. thread your own). Other sources are Pachmayr , Forster, Marshalls Hardware, Hillman etc.

Finally, divorce yourself from any idea of using hex head fastners for firearm applications, whenever possible; use torx / torx-plus, your life will be better for it.

Speaking of Hillman, they have a nice gunsmith thread screw checker (for a few bucks ) that compliments the usual screw checkers that are pretty handy to have on the bench.

Perfect and thank u for the heads up and probably some headache. I always wondered what screw heads I should buy

I have always found Torx and Robertson (square head) are the most resistant to stripping. Phillips and hex strip the easiest with flat in the middle if using a good screw driver. You do not see much Robertson in the US, but growing up in Canada they were a lot more common in construction but not so much for guns.
