Before anyone blasts me, I will be calling the local PD but I was curious if anyone had called a PD before and had a SN run for a firearm? I'm curious about one of the handguns I own, having bought it FTF many years ago. Is this a service the PD usually offers or not?

Re: Firearm SN check?

If a firearm is reported stolen and a SN is provided to the authorities they may be able to verify whether the weapon in your possession is stolen property or not...other than that they would have no information on the weapon unless it was registered with the police department.

Re: Firearm SN check?

I had local PD run one for me before I took it in a trade, but I knew the guy and he did it as a favor.

I'm sure they'd be glad to check it for you though.

That's fine. If there is something cross about the firearm then they can have it. I just would rather know.

If you bought it years ago then why the urge to get it checked out now? Any why the curiosity?

Remember what happened to the curious cat...

Having a good reason to know helps one avoid unnecessary unpleasantness...

Re: Firearm SN check?

Well I guess it doesn't matter. For some reason I was thinking that VA required handguns to be registered, which prompted me to have the SN checked. However the state of VA does not require registration, so it is now a mute point.

I'm pretty sure you meant "moot point".
