Some kind of device is the key phrase here. The spring is under high compression. You can remove the cross pin and get it out (and watch it fly in the air, along with the firing pin. But getting it back in without a tool is almost impossible without gouging or bending something. I have the Kleinendorst tools but Sinclair Int'l also makes a set. You'll need both and maybe it's not worth the $60 or so if it only needs occasional doing. A gunsmith will have the tools.
