First AR-10 build and a little confused already

Hello everyone. I've actually been a member here for a long time but I haven't been on here for a while so had to start a new account. When I first started in precision shooting I came here for everything. I still have my 308 bolt but I've been itching to build a precision 308 semi auto. Honestly I probably won't shoot it very often once it is all done and dialed in but I just feel I need one.
The other day I stumbled across a pretty good deal on a Jack-10 by spikes. Normally something like this would be the farthest thing from something I actually like but I just couldn't get my mind off of it so I bought it. Does anyone know much about these? It's a matched upper and lower. Hopefully they are a good platform to start this build because I done no homework or research on it prior to buying it. And now I can't really find much info on it as far as a completed build and the results.
So anyway I am trying to get the parts list together for it and I am confused on the hand guard. It says it uses the DPMS high rail height. The hand guard I found that I like says it fits DPMS LR-308 high rail height. Is this the same? It's made by Midwest Industries MI-308SS15-DHM it's not exactly what I want but it's pretty close. I found it on a web site called cheaper than dirt.
My second question is barrel length. Is 18" to short? I hope to one day find a 1000 yard range to stretch the legs on my bolt gun and this build as well but right now I'm limited to 450yards and most of the time 250 yards. I load all my own ammo but 308 reloads have always been for my bolt actions. The barrel I'm looking at is from rainier arms. It says it is a shillen blank that they machine to their specs. It's stainless and fluted. This may change when the time comes and the more research I do but as of right now that's what I'm thinking.
Any input is appreciated on what I have and what I listed I am looking at so far.

If they are both DMPS High then they will work. If it's not exactly what you want then you might keep looking around and try and find exactly what it is you want. Not sure about how much you're willing to spend but I spent well over $2000 on mine and I wasn't willing to accept anything less than what I wanted. Neither should you. We spend a lot of money in this hobby and I don't think there is much reason you should have to settle on anything less than what you want.

As for barrel length, It will get you out to a thousand but probably not the best barrel length for it. If this is only going to be a range toy then there is no reason not to go a little longer. When I got my barrel I went with a JP 22". Yes it's more money than the Ranier Arms barrels but it does a great job and have been very surprised with what it can do. I have no regrets spending the money even though it took me a little longer to complete the initial build. And it's still not exactly finished LMAO. I'm waiting on the call from Vortex saying they are sending me my Gen II Viper PST and it will probably be completed in its final configuration. At least until I find something else to add or change LMAO.

+1 On the JP barrel. Also remember, their price seems but it comes with a matching bolt thats been headspaced to the barrel. So when you factor that in its not all that more expensive. Just grab a bolt carrier only without the bolt from JP or Rubber City Armory and your set.

Ive recently been testing Rainier UltraMatch (Shilen) barrels in 5.56 and they are tack drivers. Havent tested any of their AR10 barrels yet.

Thank you for the replies. I just checked out the jp website and it's great. It looks like they have almost everything I'm looking for assuming it's all good quality. I think I will go with their barrel/bolt/carrier/gas block and muzzle break. Possibly their buffer/spring too. Still can't find a hand guard that is exactly what my eye likes but I'm not in a hurry to finish this. Thank you again for the info

One more thing. In my mind the hand guard I'm hoping to find would be a little bit squarish on the receiver end and sorta transition to a round profile as it goes toward the muzzle. Maybe there is not such a thing for the larger frame but in my head that's what I'm looking for. The immediate round profile coming off this receiver just doesn't do it for me. Not sure I'm even explaining this right but if anyone knows of something like this please let me know.

I love my Jack 10 receiver set. My specs are jp 14.5" super match barrel, low mass bcg, gen 2 silent captured spring, jl billet 15" hand guard it weighs 10oz with barrel nut, jl Billet MBS stock, giessele hi speed national match DMR trigger and a slr sentry 7 adjustable gas block. It weighs in at 8.6 pounds empty minus Optics.i can push 185 juggernaut at 2250 and for my da of 5000' I'm super sonic to 800 yards.

Cant go wrong with the JP components. Every item of there's I've ever used in a build has been 100% top notch quality and worth every penny! As per the shape/style of handguard you're looking for, nothing comes to mind. Have you looked at the Seekins handguard that is flat on the bottom but angled on the sides? (Sorry, the exact model designation for that handguard escapes me right now.) SLR, Aero Precision, Apex, and JP all make good handguards too.

+1 On JP components. Also, for optics, what are you gonna get? General rule of thumb is spend at least as much on optics as you do on your rifle. Good luck...

Well today my granddaughter was over and done a search for me( not sure why I can't ever find what I'm looking for). She was able to find a lot of different hand guards for me to look at and I'm really liking the Fortis Switch. Any good or bad reports on these? Do they stay locked up solid when a bipod is mounted and shot repeatedly?
As far as optics go I haven't decided yet. I will probably go with another Vortex. I have the Viper PST FFP on my bolt and I love it. If I can get this build to shoot under 1" at 100 yards I may go with the Razor HD. If I can't get it under 1 inch I will put the viper on it and get the razor for my bolt gun.

I don't think youll have a problem with sub moa with those components, especially if you reload. I have a nice, but somewhat "budget build" AR10, and it's well under an inch with 43gr Varget and 178 Amax's
