Hey guys. I'm starting my first AR 10 build. I've built or helped build a few AR 15's but no AR 10. I've been looking through this forum and other places for info, but I haven't been able to decide yet. I'd like to get some ideas from the guys here about options(triggers, stocks, uppers, etc). Does anyone prefer .308 or .260? I would like to see some accuracy out to 800 or 1000. I've had know problems achieving these distances with bolt action rifles, and would like to see if I can with the semi's. Any good info would be much appreciated. Thanks again.

Re: First AR 10 build

If you are going for distance, i.e. 1000 yds. or greater, then choose something other than .308 as it does not compare ballistically against any of the following: .260, 6.5x47, 6XC, .243 Super, or 6.5 Creedmoor. If your goal is to feed from the magazine, the shorter cases (other than .260 or .243 Super) give some additional latitude with bullet seating to a limited degree. Pay attention to all the little details with the larger brother since all the little things matter that likely don't affect the AR15 like polishing the bolt face and shimming the extension. Zediker's books give plenty of detail as well as many of the posts in the gunsmith section of this forum. Decide on whether you want an actual AR10 (Armalite) or just a large platform (though the MA 10 will work with either parts set)and get the best parts you can. Much is made here about barrels and triggers, but the reality is that these are the most subjective parts of all, buy quality and don't look back as they will all give respectable results, i.e Kriger, Rock, etc... Geissele, X-treme respectively. FWIW I built a full custom DPMS based large platform in .260 with a Krieger tube and Xtreme tirgger fitted by Derek at Accuracy Speaks and it has been consistently sub minute to 1000 yards.

Re: First AR 10 build

There are always some nice AR10s for sale in the For Sale section here on the hide. Usually find a good deal with no wait on a build. I you can find what you want....the big if.

*Full disclosure. I have two for sale there now.

Re: First AR 10 build

well doing it with a semi-auto wont make it any easier considering you wont be able to hit the velocity of a bolt gun but its definitley possible. The 260 remington offers better ballistics but there are alot less uppers to choose from and the brass is a bitch to come by and in my experience 260 is more finicky in an ar than 308. I have a DPMS in 260 remington and can easily get 1/2 to 3/4 MOA with handloads. I know les baer has a 308 AR that he guarantees 1/2 MOA which would be a great gun and i have heard nothing but good things about. If you want to go full custom GAP makes a sweet ar-10. But i like JP and LWRC and any of the custom makers really are all good. Rock River makes a good 308 and guarantees 3/4 MOA. The AR-10 is a different beast with manufactures making there own things. Its not like an AR-15 were almost all parts are interchangable.

Re: First AR 10 build

I would suggest the 308, but if you are set on going to 1000yds, it might not be the best choice. I have had no problems with DPMS uppers or lowers. I might suggest a Krieger barrel and either Geissele or Timney for a trigger. I initially hesitated on the Magpul PRS stock, but being able to adjust length of pull and eye alignment directly behind the scope did make a difference.

Re: First AR 10 build

If you cannot shoot 1000 yards with a well built AR10 with a 20" barrel chambered in .308 with properly mounted high quality optics and appropriate ammo then the problem lies with the shooter, not the rifle nor the cartridge.

That would be the Indian, not the arrow......

What are you going to use it for?

Re: First AR 10 build

Thanks again guys for the great info. Just to clarify for some, I have shot the distances consistantly with bolt action rifles so I'm not concerned about that. I just wanted some information on quality parts and suggestions for my build. And I got that, thanks toolmaker and everyone else for the suggestions!
