I finally picked up my first bolt action rifle, a Rem. 700 LTR with a 20" barrel.

I've already learned so much here on the Hide and look forward to learning and sharing knowledge. I look forward to practicing with my new rifle after obtaining a scope.

I am in the process of researching a quality optic. Comments and opinions for a quality, variable optic around $1,500 (or less) is appreciated. I figure that I can grow into the scope but maybe I should learn on a less expensive scope first? Please correct me if I'm wrong and feel free to offer your recommendations.

Thanks!

Denn, if you have 1500 to play with on an optic..... I say look at getting a Super Sniper HD and use the rest of the money towards a class at rifles only or learning to reload.

Optic wise I suggest going with Leupold or Nightforce. Using and learning on the glass you will have for years to come would be more beneficial rather than going with budget glass only to replace it down the line and then have to get re acquainted with new glass. The LTR is a great stick so set it up the way you want now and then really learn how to use it.

I was in the same boat on optics vs. all the other stuff I'd need. As suggested above, I went with a good mid-priced optic and spent the rest of the money on a good spotting scope, reloading supplies, bags, slings, books, videos, etc. By the time I've "outgrown" the Bushnell 4200 I will likely be ready for an AI or APA stick anyway. You will be amazed at how quickly all the other stuff adds up. I'm at $3300 last count for just a Savage FCP-K and all the trimmings.

I went with a full Nightforce package. NF 20MOA base, NF steel rings, and NF 5.5-22 X 50 with Zero Stop. I also sent my bolt to Keith Johns to have him install an extended knob. I should have it back sometime this week.
