I ordered my first bolt rifle today. I've been wanting a long range rifle for a long time now and I finally saved up enough spare change to build a nice (relatively speaking) rifle. It's a Remington 700SS 5-R Milspec in .300wm with the threaded 24" barrel. I'm super pumped to pick it up tomorrow

. I'm probably going to order an AICS in the next few weeks. I also would like to have some work done by GAP. Any recommendations for a n00b? I have a couple parts in mind, but I'm completely new to this and am open to all suggestions.

Re: First Bolt Gun!

I have this rifle's baby brother, the .223, and it's great. You will enjoy it!

Definitely give the HS stock that comes with it a chance. I didn't think i would like it but after a few range sessions it grew on me and I didnt get the AICS.

I have been seeing .300win mag ammo pretty regularly so I hope it's not going away like everything else...

Re: First Bolt Gun!

Oh meant to ask what scope you are planning to get?

Also, I think the trigger is the first piece to look at having work done. I do like the x-mark trigger, but having shot other rifles I can see there's much better out there.

Re: First Bolt Gun!

I appreciate the feedback. I'll give the HS stock a chance. From what I've seen the 300wm is readily available, but i do plan on hand loading (also a first for me). I was planning on getting the Vortex Viper PST, but if I hold off on the AICS I'll try to get a NF or the USMC spec Leupold. I've searched though the forum, but I'd like first hand info on what other scopes I should check out for under $1500.

Re: First Bolt Gun!

I have the Nightforce 3.5-15x50 F1 on mine and I love it.

I dont know much about the AAC brakes for .300 win mag... sorry. Someone else will certainly chime in!

Re: First Bolt Gun!

I have a remy 700 300 win mag with a hs under it they really are a high quality stock. I put a timney trigger in mine m16 style extractor bolt knob heavier recoil lug a sheilen barrel and a AAC break which works fantastic But your 5r will shoot great out of the box put a muzzle break, trigger and if you want a bolt knob and you will be happy the pst is a great scope but will only have adjustment for about 1300 yards with a 100 yard zero so if you ever want to start shooting those real long shots get the nf if not the pst is pretty awesome for the money.

Re: First Bolt Gun!

Picked up the rifle today. It is wayyyy nicer than I thought it would be! A buddy of mine loaned me a Millet 6-25x56 scope until I can save up for good glass. I figure it'll work for the time being. I have a KRG Whiskey 3 chassis on the way and I couldn't be happier. Next its off to GAP for muzzle brake timing and Cerakote.
I can tell this is going to be an expensive habit.

You have no idea...welcome to the club though, and like the rest say, get as much ammo as you can and shoot it!!!
