Alright guy let me start off by saying i'm pretty new to the hide, and love it so far, lots of great information and great guys.

I am currently still in college at UA (ROLL TIDE) and i have a horrible (or wonderful) addiction, GUNS GUNS GUNS, but let's stay on the main topic here. I will not be out of college for another year and a half, and therefore will not have that much income until then, so my plan is to either buy each part as $$$ becomes available or save and buy all at once when im out in the real world. Also i guess this technically isnt my "first" build, I have a rem 700 7mm rem mag that I put into a B&C a5 but that's about it.

Alright here's what I got so far on the "Christmas list" of parts:

Action: Surgeon short action

Stock: AICS 2.0 (i have seen some people that say "AICS modified for surgeon" and the such. what modifications need to be made for it to fit? from what I know the surgeon is a 700 footprint so should fit perfectly right?)

Trigger: jewell trigger

Barrel: Bartlein 6.5mm, can't decide between #6,7, and 9 contours. What do you guys think? Planning on chambering for 6.5x47 lapua. Also twist rates? Will mostly be shooting 139gr scenar and 140gr A-max. 1-8 or 1-8.5 with 5r rifling?

Lastly once I get all the parts together and I wand say GAP to put it together i send them the barrel blank, action, and trigger and ask them to chamber/install it for me and crown the muzzle will it be the $350 service (which includes truing) or the $250 (says for action already trued by GAP)? I would think the $250 because the reason im buying a surgeon action is because it is already trued, so i don't want to pay an extra $100 to true something that's already true

Thanks, Andrew

Re: First Build Questions!

I have a surgeon In a aisc stock and it fits great with no mods. 6.5X47 is a great tactical round, you will want .125-.150 free-bore reamer no-turn neck. bartlein would be an exellent barrel choice, I would do any of the palma contours or even a rem. varmit would be great, 1-8 twist for heavy bullets. Gap does great work good choice there, they will not need to true anything at all on the surgeon period- Just fit barrel and cut the muzzle.

Re: First Build Questions!

I have been looking at a lot of custom rifle talk and was just wandering if you shop around for decent prices what would be a estimate on a build like this. Just trying to get a idea about what it would take cash wise for me to get started on a custom rifle. Thanks.

Re: First Build Questions!

Wow I knew it was steep but that pretty impressive. I just started on a small build. No were near custom but I got a rem700 sps tactical .223AI. Just doing things as the money get available. Guess I will have to be content with it for a while. It's nowhere near what y'all have but still a blast to shoot. Thanks for the info

Andrew, If your going to stay with a 6.5x47 Lapua chamber or something similar go with a 1-8 twist. If a chamber like .260 Rem. and 6.5x55 etc...go with a 1-8.5.

The contour will only effect weight for the most part. You have to ask yourself what are you going to do with the gun? I would run our #14 or #7 or a med. or heavy palma contour but at a shorter length.

Re: First Build Questions!

Don't forget while saving the money for the build to start thinking and saving for the optic too. That part can be very pricey also.

Re: First Build Questions!

Andrew:

I would follow the advice that Frank is providing. Had him build my rifled action for me a couple of years ago and it's amazingly accurate...even with a hack like me pulling the trigger. His advice is as good as gold!

I built a .260 Improved. We used the canted rifling with a 1:8.5" twist. This round really likes 139-142gr. bullets. I think you'd be very pleased with the 1:8.5" twist....for the bullets you want to use.

Good Luck,

Wayne

Re: First Build Questions!

I have a 260 built off of a 700 action trued with a krieger barrel. It is a 8.5 twist and it loves any bullet up to 142gns I have put throught it. It shoots .25 moa with SMK in 107, 123, and 142gn. I dont see any need to go to an 8 twist but I also haven't tried any Berger VLD.
