Hey yall

Was invited here from a buddy that posts on here (I won't name drop lol). Been reading my ass off for the last week. My wife is getting a little concerned I think lol.

I'm new to precision shooting but not shooting in general. Been shooting since I was 4. Hunting, rec shooting, military (Army go Rakkasans!) and 11 years Law Enforcement.

All my extensive training has been with the AR15 platform so I'm excited for the switch.

As long as work allows I'm heading to my local GS to order a Savage 10 FLCP-K (Left hander here).

I've started a grocery list for the rest of the kit I'll be needing (IE optics, base and rings, case etc)

Any help I can get with the list and where to get it would be greatly appreciated.

I hear nothing but great things about the Savage but if there are anything I can do (in the future) I can add that to the list.

I'm on a budget so these are more of a wish list for the future once the rifle is in.

I'm hoping to have the rifle up and running by September. Would be nice for deer season lol.

Ok enough rambling. Back to studying lol

Welcome, so it begins!!!!!! If your wife is concerned now, just wait. My wife just doesn't understand but she gets it. I've been following this sites for years but just recently began posting. Again, welcome.

Re: First Post - First LR Rifle

There is all kind of good info on here....if you havent already use the SH google search it makes it a lot nicer to find things your studying up on. Listen and Learn all kinds of good info posted here biggest thing ive learned since coming to this site

Re: First Post - First LR Rifle

Welcome. Be sure to have a thick skin, because most oeople will give it to you straight.

I think its a good idea to patronize the advertisers of the hide. Most anything you want/need can be obtained through them.

To get you started, youll need glass, mounting hardware, and ammo. You will be able to score a totally decent optic in the for sale area. Budget is a big deal, so think that out thoroughly. As far as I'm concerned, a Nikon is the least expensive decent glass out there. Then Leupold, nightforce.... I cant speak highly enough of Ken Farrell bases and rings. Ammo: Federal gold medal match is an old standby, but costs over $1/round. My Savage shoots Federal powershok at 1moa, and thats what i started on. I bought 1000 rounds at 50 cents each. Might I suggest handloading?

Re: First Post - First LR Rifle

Yeah, I liken it to golf. Some haft have the latest greatest and will pay for it. Some are happy to stay out of the rough and improve with what they have. Ha! Ha!

Re: First Post - First LR Rifle

Thanks for all the kind words. Pretty thick skin (can't be a bald white cop and not have thick skin lol).

I'm thinking about the Leupold M4 4.5-14 LR/T Target in Mildot. I have a pro deal with Leupold and can get the scope for less than 650. Seems like a good deal but I'm still looking and am completely open to suggestions.

Budget is definitely a concern at this point as I know this is an expensive habit. Lord knows my ARs are expensive enough and I hardly pay for ammo lol.

I called around today and have it set to go down on Friday to order my Savage 308. Their website is not too informative and not to sound too nubish but does the Save 10 FLCP-K take magazines or no? I thought it did but I keep reading on here (although I have not been able to do a whole lot of in depth reading. I'm working as I type this) and it seems like they do not.

Is this a propitiatory magazine issue or no magazine issue. I thought I knew but now I'm second guessing myself thinking its like my old Remy ADL in the safe. I would prefer not to have another system like that.

If I can get up tomorrow before they close I plan to call Savage again (left a message for their area rep today) I'll ask about it if no one here chimes in.

If all goes well I will be setup and shooting by the end of next month.

Again all info is greatly appreciated. Little ribbing is good too

The 10FLCP-K uses 4-round proprietary Savage detachable mags.

Savage Model Code Legend:

When you get to the Savage web site, look down the bottom, and click on the current catalogue icon. This will provide you with a PDF file download of the up to date current catalogue, which covers just about everything imaginable about the Savage product lines.

Re: First Post - First LR Rifle

Gage,

Stay away from the basic Savage plastic stock. I fully intended to replace mine when I bought it as it was the main reason it came in as inexpensive as it was. The package 10FCP is a good deal but neither the stock (plastic rather than the Accustock, no doubt to keep the price down), rings or scope are still on my rifle!

Mine came with the detachable magazine on the new center feed geometry (three screws) set up for the Accustock, though mine was a Dick's package that came without the Accustock.

I am reading good things about the Accustock but it is really more of a hunting rifle stock and not really what you may desire for your new pursuit!

The model with the H.S. precision stock is probably the next best value: Already set up with their DBM and magazine will save a lot of time! Then of course there is the setup they offer with McMillan stock!

I have since replaced the stock on mine with a B&C tactical, got the CDI treatment from Jeff in Sarasota, a EGW 20 MOA mount and a Nikon Buckmasters 6-18 Mil-Dot. I tuned the Accutriger down to its minimum; around 2.5 pounds.

Re: First Post - First LR Rifle

Thanks for the advice guys. I was hoping to get to Bass Pro today to see if they had any model 10s but doesn't look like I'll make it before heading out to work.

I saw pictures of the last NCPPRC match. Very cool. I know a few guys that shoot out there every once in a while. I'm planning on joining once I have my rifle set up.

I know I still have a ton of reading too do and just as many questions lol. This is one facet of shooting I've auplways wanted to get into.

Just woke up and I know I'm rambling now lol. Keep he advice flowing guys all is appreciated.

Re: First Post - First LR Rifle

I bought the 10 fcp-k and it has a detachable mag. I don't like the stock and will probably replace it but it will do for now as it is my wife's rifle. overall you will like your rifle out of the box

Re: First Post - First LR Rifle

Welcome. swfa makes some nice scopes for the money. Stay focused on fundamentals and not buying fancy bolt on crap. You will need the money for practice ammo. Dry fire! Dry fire! Dry fire! Also start by reading all the post from Lowlight and Lindy.
