Nikon is a well known name to the American hunter, birdwatcher, and photographer. I got my hands on some of the new Nikon EDG 8x42 binoculars today. My initial reaction was the price difference can’t be worth it, but I was very wrong. When I picked up the binoculars I first noticed a few things, such as built in flip down objective covers, position able horned style eye cups, and the very comfortable design. They sport a magnesium-alloy rubber armored body which feels very solid and comfortable. They also feature Nikons new Extra-low Dispersion glass and dielectric coated prisms which provide excellent color contract, resolution, and brighter views. I adjusted the binoculars and got them into focus, the diopter is located in the same position as the focusing wheel in the center of the binoculars, to adjust the diopter you simply pull the focusing wheel out and position your finger on the space under and in front of the focus wheel. It took some getting used to as with most you pull out the focus wheel and adjust the diopter by turning the same wheel. Once in focus I glassed objectives as close as 5 feet and as far out as 500 yards with great results. They also had good low light performance, to my eye looking as good and bright as the Swarovski EL 8x42 binoculars I had out for comparison. These binoculars would be great for any birder or hunter looking for some new glass.
