My Remington 700 SPS Tactical 308 will be here this week...
This will be for punching holes in paper at max 300yrds...

EGW 0 MOA base....

Burris Fullfield 2 4.5-14x42....

Burris rings....

With no long range experience, should this combo keep me busy for a while? I'm reading about different stocks, better triggers etc...Yikes!!!

I already have a list of goodies, just from reading here....But hopefully i should be ready to rock right out of the box...

Re: First post...Info overload!!! First bolt gun!

I am ready to order one of these this week. About the only thing I am going to do is drop it in a new stock. Sounds like it should be a great rig!!

Re: First post...Info overload!!! First bolt gun!

Yes, this should keep you satisfied for quite a while. You will be surprised sometimes at how a lower end scope can perform. Sometimes you get the right one and it works great, but they are hit or miss at best. At 300 hundred yards you will have no problems with that set up. By time you get decent at shooting and want to upgrade, you will already have a great starting base.

Re: First post...Info overload!!! First bolt gun!

superbee1 you do realize you could handload that same very ammo for $12.00 for 20 rounds. I'm assuming that's much cheaper than you spent on it. Invest the 100.00 in a reloading kit from Lee, get a neck coalating die and use the brass from that FGMM to reload you custom handloads for your rifle. If you do it right your groups should shrink dramaticially.

Good luck,
Merritt

Re: First post...Info overload!!! First bolt gun!

Just please Superbee before you start reloading do a junk ton of reading. Far more reading than you think you'll need. Reloading can be very dangerous, and quite easy to go over safe measures. Be sure you understand what you're doing before you actually start loading. Don't get me wrong reloading is a fantastic idea and something I feel more shooters should be doing, but at the same time as a first go you'll want to know far more than you think you need.

Be safe and shoot straight.

Re: First post...Info overload!!! First bolt gun!

I have had mine for 4 weeks. The cheek piece was a must for me. Put it on while I was saving for a new stock. Ended up with a mcree. I have hit steel 12x12 targets out to 1k with plans to go farther.

Re: First post...Info overload!!! First bolt gun!

I started out with an SPS Tactical and all that rifle NEEDS is to be fed.

When I first got mine, I threw a cheapie Weaver or Leupold mount on it and and threw a Nightforce 5.5-22X50 on top.

This is how it shot stock out of the box with the "crappy" Hogue stock and X-Mark trigger....

These result were very typical.

Since then, I've added an HS Precision stock, had the lugs lapped, Timney trigger and a Krieger barrel. Know how it shoots now? About the same as it did before.

The advantages that I gained with the upgrades benefitted my comfort more than anything. The rifle now feels better to me and as a consequence, I can shoot faster. Not better, just faster. The benefits that I saw with the Krieger barrel are that I'm getting much higher velocities, due to the tighter chamber dimensions. I can also go something around 300 rounds between cleainings before accuracy seems to start to fall off. I'm also not getting any copper fouling at all with the Krieger (this was a problem with the stock barrel. I was always de-coppering). I love all of these benefits and don't regret them at all, but I didn't NEED any of them to shoot accurately.

My advise. Put around 1000 rounds down the pipe before you start spending money on upgrades. By that time, you'll have a good idea of what you need and what you don't. Personally, I think that the trigger was more important than the stock. I'd do the trigger first.

I know the Hogue ain't great, but it is pillar bedded and not too shabby.

As far as reloading goes, I wouldn't dump too much money into buying that Federal Gold Medal Match stuff. It is great shooting ammo, but the brass sucks. Just get yourself a Lee Classic Cast press and set of dies along with all the other stuff you will need and get rolling.

A very good start load that is easy to shoot and that almost all rifles like is 42gr of either Reloader 15 or Varget with a 168gr Sierra Match King seated to 2.8" OAL. Don't worry about touching the lands or anything like that right now. You won't get to the lands anyway with the stock barrel. Not while still being able to load the rounds in the magazine or maintaining good neck tension anyway. I'm recommeding this load, because as I said, almost all rifles like this load to some degree.

Once you're hitting consistenly at 100, then 200 yards you can start to tailor some loads with more umph to reach out farther with a flatter trajectory and less wind drift.

Great info thank you for your time and knowledge.....The reloading thing isnt gonna be for a long while. Like i said i have alot of ammo to shoot up first. If you get a chance a PM from you with the reloading equipment i would need would be very helpful. Then i can start my reading and research on that....

Re: First post...Info overload!!! First bolt gun!

Head on over to the reloading forum if you haven't allready. There's a ton of amazingly helpful info in there that you should be kept busy for days with. Any and all info you need to know will be stated and re-stated over and over again in there...

PM inboud with my current "el cheapo" setup that works great.

Re: First post...Info overload!!! First bolt gun!

save your money and go spend it on some good quality ammo and practice. trigger control/breathing/positions/wind reading/distance judging. Once you have a good feel for this and think you are ready than start buying the goods. Or just by a GAP rifle already setup for you.

Happy shooting.
