First let me explain a bit why I'm asking about my recipe:

I'm a soldier, home on leave from Iraq for 3 more days. I ordered all the equipment I'ld need to reload while I was doing the first 1/2 of my deployment. I read alot on reloading while over there.

I came home on leave, built and set up all my reloading equipment, and got down to buisness.

I wont have the oppertunity to go shoot befor I have to head back to Iraq, so for my own piece of mind, I wanted to make sure my recipe sounded safe and ok. I think it should be...

Rifle being used is a Rem700 .308 with a 26" bull barrel.

Recipe:

Brass: Winchester .308 that had the factory loads fired out.
Full length resized with Lee Dies
Case was trimmed to 2.012

Bullet: Sierra Match King 175gr HPBT

Powder: 44.6 gr VARGET
Primer: CCI Large Rifle

OAL: 2.81 (Varries between 2.808 and 2.812)

Also for a question.... does having lube in the case neck affect anything when the round gets fired? I was not sure, so I washed all my cases after resizing as the lube allowed brass shavings and the lube itself to stick inside the case neck.

Thanks for looking, I dont post much on SH but I read the site several times a day and it has always been a wealth of information.

1st Thanks for your service!

Load sounds goods, getting to the upper limits.
Read about ladder tests and ocw test for the next time you are home.
Never ever hurts to be clean good job.
Be safe get home soon
Thanks again

Thanks for looking over my load guys. Gives me a bit of piece of mind for when I get home again and go shoot them.

My rough plan was to use the cheap factory loads I have left to rough sight in my scope. Then switch to these to dial the scope into match grade ammo.

After the scope is sighted in I'll start makeing loads at about 43gr of varget, and move up in powder in 0.2gr incriments till I find what my rifle likes the best.

The rifle set up, which I'm getting excited about shooting, is:

Rifle: Rem700 SPS Tac (screwed up some muzzle threads so instead of cutting it to 19" I bought a 26" factory barrel of Gunbraker for $120 that is new) & Installing a DPMS Muzzle Brake.
Rail: Badger 20moa Rail, bedded to the Reciever
Scope: SWFA SS 10x42
Stock: Choate Ult Varmit (may upgrade to AICS 1.5 if funds permit)
Cheek Weld: Karsten Cheek Rest.

I really like the AICS stock and figure its about the same cost as a A4 or A5 but comes already set up for mags, where inletting an A4 or A5 will bump up its price to be about the same as the AICS.

I like the Choate ok, but dislike the bipod mount... its a flat bottom stock, and bipods that mount to sling studs are designed to go on a rounded stock. So the bipod just feels kinda jerry rigged on there.

Still with the old barrel on it....

Re: First reload recipe...priece of mind request.

I like 45 grains of Varget under the various 175/178s, (in Winchester, Hrornady, BHA or Remington brass. A little less in Lapua or FC) and use them interchangeably.

Every barrel is different though so while your load is still in the generic safe range, have a look for extreme pressure signs with the first round or two.

Thank you for your service and be safe!

Thanks for your support.

I have started reloading 5 round groups, dropping the powder load by 0.3gr per group. So currently I have:

5 rounds of the same measurments as above in:
44.6gr
44.3gr
44.0gr

Still going to load some in 43.7, and 43.4

When I get home I want to find my rifles sweet spot.
