Guys,
I need a little help. I have had a couple of rifles built using M700 SA’s and LA’s. However I would like to put a Savage together for the first time in either a 308win or 260rem. This would be primarily for hunting deer and lope and some target shooting. So my question is, what model (action) would I need to get, in order to put one together. I would also like to attach a brux or bartlein on it. What smith or smiths would you recommend that would true a Savage action.

You can use any of the Savage actions, short, intermediate, or long. Need a .473 bolt face I believe is the right diameter for the bolt face. It's right close to that anyways. 243, 7mm-08, 30.06 etc is all the same bolt head diameter. A short action would be optimum I guess, but a long action will work. The mag box is probably another issue though. Something built for the 243, 7mm-08, etc would be best. The 7mm mag or 300wm long actions will require a different mag setup, so I'd probably look for someone's old hunting rig in a common caliber for deer hunting.

The intermediate is not a common action to find and it is limited on stock selection, which is really the only draw back. If you go to Kevin Rayhill at Stockade gun stocks, he can make you anything you want as far as stocks go. He's currently building me a stock for an intermediate action that I got pretty cheap for a build. Just FYI

Go with a stevens 200 if you plan on upgrading the trigger, and only need an action. I have two builds based on the Stevens and have been happy with both. You can pick up a new Stevens 200 rifle for around $350 or find an action for aroun $250.

Thanks Guys,

There are just so many model numbers. I figured out last night that the model 10 is short and the 110 is the long. All i need is the action; I plan on replacing the trigger, barrel and stock.

Is there a difference in the actions between a model 10, 11, and 12? Is one a higher grade?
Whats would be considered a good price for one of these?
Thanks again, you guys really know your stuff on this sight.

+1 on the Stevens action. If you're going to do a custom stock, the 4.4" Center Feed action with the bolt release on top (as oppossed to on the trigger guard) gives you the most options (110 Long Actions have a few options too).

OP - you might want to drop by Savageshooters and have a look around. And Jim Briggs at Northland Shooter Supply can sell you all the new gear you'll ever need.
