Rifle Scopes First scope with adjustable turrets question

Well, I got an SWFA SS10x42 for christmas! I love the scope, and I got the mil-dot master. I've been reading a lot about using the mildot and mil/mil. I have a long way to go however before I can actually use the system.

On the scope, the turrets click very positive, however there is a .125 mil of movement in the turret between clicks. The turrets can be "wiggeled" left and right a little without clicking. Is this normal? This will not affect POI will it?

I used the search function, and I won't be able to get to the range for a while until I get some 30mm rings, to see if it affects anything.

Re: First scope with adjustable turrets question

Check the manual and verify the turret set screw(s) are tight. I would be concerned about any "slop" in the turrents, although I don't have an SS. Maybe someone who does will add some more specific insight.

Re: First scope with adjustable turrets question

It didn't come with any manual. It kind of sucks since the slop essentially means I have to redial if I didn't count the clicks. Otherwise I cannot tell exactly which Mil it is on.

Re: First scope with adjustable turrets question

Now you see why I say "glass quality" is not the sole reason we go with high end scopes.

Mid to high end scopes won't let you stick between a click.

1. Don't count clicks.
2. always pass your dope and come back from the other direction.
3. Do you really think you or your rifle is capable of .125 mRad accuracy?

Now you also see one of the reasons I LOVE the Bushnell 3200 10x Mil/Mil as a beginners scope. It has very positive clicks and won't let you sit between them unless you REALLY try.

Yeah, I guess I was just expecting a little more after reading so many reviews, and all of the support here. Wouldn't .125 mRad equal .45"? Just if the turret shits between shots because of recoil or being touched, .125 mils is going to ruin a sub-moa group.

That is if the POI is effected by the movement between clicks. I sure hope it isn't.

Each mil is divided into quaters on this scope.

Re: First scope with adjustable turrets question

Actually on that scope those are MOA, not Mils. Their more expensive scopes have .1 Mil clicks but that change hasn't made it down to the original line yet.

I've played with a few of those scopes and while their clicks aren't always as crisp as you'd like, I don't see them moving during recoil if you pay a little attention when adjusting.

I think if you mount it up and go shoot it, you'll likely find the scope works just fine.

Not trying to be nasty....but are you capable of consistently shooting 1/2 MOA groups?

I have never seen a mRad scope that is divided into quarters. I think you need to learn some more about your gear.

Before totally loosing confidence in your equipment, how about you take it out and shoot it.

No problem, I checked it out and yes, it is MOA. I'm glad to know that now, my bad for thinking it was Mil/Mil.

I have gotten sub-moa, and by that I mean just under 1". Not close to 1/2" by anymeans. Then again all I've really used has been remington core-lokt.

You're right, I need to take this out and shoot it before I start thinking something is wrong. Thanks, I think I am going to get this mounted and hit the range before I continue making posts like this.
