Suppressors First suppressor questions for a newb.

Hey guys, I just got my first can and had a few questions.

First is cleaning the barrel. I normally just clean when accuracy falls off. Does the same hold true when firing suppressed full power loads?? I noticed my rifle is a lot dirtier than it normally would after firing 30 rounds or so.

My first 20 rounds were dead on, but by the last string of 10 my shots were a little outside the grouping. Most likely me from shooter fatigue and the mirage.

The second is on the back of the can there looks like a pattern of gas leakage. It's a thread on can btw, is this normal to find???

Are you using factory loads?

What cal.?

What can is it?

No you should not have gas coming out of the back of the can.

If you are throwing shots after that many rounds, your probably getting it to hot. After about five rounds your can will get pretty hot, and it transfers that heat to the barrel and you will start throwing shots.

can got warm but I allowed it to cool enough between shots so that I could still hold it with bare hand. Is that still considered too hot maybe??

Same with barrel, barrel was definitely warmer but not too hot to hold.

gas isn't necessarily coming back at me from the rear of the can, but I see carbon deposits on the back of the can. Should I call tac ops?

Are you seeing any pressure signs on your load?

If you can hold it with your hand, than it's not that hot to start throwing shots, but the temp in the chamber may be enough to cause over pressure or a change in your load. You will probably need to rework your load for the can.

What powder are you using?

You should have a good seal with the shoulder but, I'm sure some gas might leak. I don't think I get much of any carbon on my SWR after 100rds. Who threaded it?

Every suppressor I have ever had leaves residue at the thread base. I wouldnt worry about that. just make sure it is on there tight.

Its perfectly normal to see some carbon tracking on the back of the can. The pressure is very high in rifle caliber ammo and the threads were never intended to seal it all. Its almost impossible to seal the shoulder well enough to prevent any leakage as well. As long as the can isn't loose or tipping you should be fine. They do make a type of thread intended to seal well against high pressure but that thread is normally a very tight fit and tapered.

As for the heat you may see some change in the group with the increase in temperature but it depends on the rifle. Some guns don't see a lot of difference with heat and others change drastically. How does your rifle do without the can when you fire enough to heat the barrel? As the other poster noted the suppressor will increase the heat buildup and lower the time to do so. I fired over 200rds (mostly 20 or 30rds at a time) of .338 lapua this weekend through a can with no noticeable change in the point of impact. It was pretty toasty. You will likely see a change in the point of impact with the can versus without. Thats normal.

Best way to answer your question is to do some testing on your own to see how your rifle/can combo works.

No pressure signs, easy bolt lift and extraction, primers look good.

load development is with the can on. RL 22 208 amax cci 200 lapua brass.

I'll run the bore stnake through and do some testing...

As I explained to you telephonically earlier this would not be the case if I threaded your barrel for you. When you sent your rifle down to be bedded you asked me to check your alignment and threading job and I did. My findings were as follows:

1. The threading though not bad was out about 3 thousandths from what I can see.

2. I noticed that the 90 on your barrel was not to my spec. This could cause the flow back of gases seeping backwards. As stated I am happy to re due the other Smiths work when you would like me to.

When you stated you had a slight burr and or strike in the I.D. of the end cap this was a concern for me. That is why Tac Ops never’s warranty’s our Suppressor’s when someone else does a T&P PERIOD.
When you are GTG just call me and I will make it right for you...

I just want to be clear that the can mike made for me is top notch. I am in NO WAY questioning the can's workmanship. As mike stated above, I have been and am still dealing with the poor workmanship of another smith as I've had other posts here indicating so.

No i didn't blow off my can, but after talking with mike, it's obvious I need to send in the barrel to get re threaded.

Even though this is my first can, everyone at the range commented on how quiet and well built the can was in quality compared to ones they currently own.
