So...I went to the range this weekend for the first time with my Remington 700 SPS Tactical in .308. It was my first time shooting a bolt-action rifle actually...and I had a great time. I definitely have a lot to learn and could have spent a lot more time reading before heading out, but overall I thought the day went well.
I started off just trying to zero at 100 yards. My first two shots didn't hit the paper, so I pasted some more paper up (was using 10x15" targets) around and found out my shots were just missing the edge by an inch. I was able to zero into a dead-center bulls-eye within about 6 shots, and then I moved out to 200 yards. I re-adjusted to bulls-eye at 200 yards, and began shooting some groups at 300 yards. Overall things were going great...I don't have an ideal set up yet (no bipod, was holding in the rear with front resting on my range bag). For my last shot I decided to try the 600 yard targets that the last guy left up for me. Unsure of the exact bullet drop out that far relative to 200 yds, I guessed it to be about 40" (I looked at charts a couple weeks ago and remember things dropping off steeply after 300yds). I clicked in 32 clicks of elevation on my 1/4mil Leupold Mark 4 (4.5-14x50) and gave it a shot. Though I didn't hit the black on the "100 yard small bore rifle" target, I did hit the paper! I was about 7-8" left and 5" low from the center of the target. Given the bench-rest condition I was pretty pleased with the results.
I'm sure I did a few things "wrong" throughout the morning as far as setting up the rifle and dialing it in, but overall it was a great experience. I decided to grab a couple pics before I headed out:

I'm sure my scope was not mounted "exactly" right...but I did the best I could trying to make sure it was level and was at the correct position relative to my shooting position. The only thing I don't really like about my setup is the way the bolt lever comes really close to the scope, and that the bolt seems a little "notchy" or sticky to operate.
This isn't a hobby I will go crazy on...but I do plan on shooting a few times a year. I'm excited to learn more from you all.
