I've been waiting on the SPS Tactical .308 to go on sale at one of the shops around here for a while now. I figured it would be a relatively cheap way to get into the LR shooting hobby. I got a card in the mail from Cabelas a couple of weeks ago to get a $150 gift card activated if you spend $500 or more, so it seemed like as good a deal as I was going to find. Got the rifle for $599 + tax and then got a 'free' $150 gift card and used it to get some cleaning stuff, bipod, and other random odds and ends that I needed but didn't want to spend the money on before.

So, here it is.

Rem 700 SPS Tactical .308
Vortex Viper 6.5-20X44 PA w/ BDC reticle
EGW 20 MOA rail
Burris XTR 30mm Low Rings
Caldwell 6-9" pivot bipod...I intended to get the Harris bipod, but I checked out both the Caldwell bipod and the Harris 6-9" pivot, leg notch bipod at the same time. They look almost identical, and they were both wobbly in the same spots...when it came down to it, I couldn't find $50 worth of difference between the two.

I shot a box of Black Hills 168 gr. AMAX and a box of Black Hills 175 gr. SMK's getting sighted in and getting a feel for the rifle. Then I settled in and shot my OCW loads that I loaded. I did a set with both 168 and 175 SMK's. Here's the targets...rounds 60-82 through the rifle.

I think for the 175's I'm going to load some between loads 5, 6, and 7 in finer increments now. For the 168's I'm thinking between 5 through 8.

Overall I'm pretty pleased with the rifle. I definitely need to get a adjustable cheek piece for it though, since I have more of a chin weld at the moment. After I pay off some bills a B&C stock is on the list, which should help out quite a bit too.

nice shootin SDeadeye.
I'm putting a rifle together right now using similar components.. EGW rail & rings, Viper 6.5-20x44, but I have the Harris coming and just ordered a HS Precision stock.

Question is, how do you like that Viper so far. I considered quite a few different scopes and finally went with the Vortex line. Should be getting it this week, I can't wait!

Re-shoot your smallest groups (#6&8 w/175's and #7 w/168's) using <span style="font-style: italic"><span style="font-weight: bold">5rds</span></span> and at <span style="font-style: italic"><span style="font-weight: bold">300yds</span></span>.

That should be a good start. Then OCD Tweak the best load accordingly.

Oh ya, and ditch that stock.

Re: First time out with new SPS Tac .308

Changing the stock will make a big difference when shooting with bipod. Hogue stock flexes so much it touches the barrel...

Re: First time out with new SPS Tac .308

I would STAY with the RL-15 BUT stay with a OAL of 2.8... load to 43.0 grns using the 175 sierra HPBT match kings.

You should be at 1/2 MOA or under easily.

Matt.

Re: First time out with new SPS Tac .308

Well, I've got a few lbs of RL-15 to use up first. Plus I can get it anywhere in town, Varget has been scarce around here for a year or so. I bumped the length up to 2.835 and got a little more accuracy at the longer ranges with them. I've been shooting these loads at 250, 300, 400, 800 and 960 yds in the past couple of weeks. So far it's hanging right around .7 MOA or so at all of the distances I've had a chance to shoot at. I think part of that is the crappy stock, a B&C is in the future, which should help out a bit I'm guessing.

Re: First time out with new SPS Tac .308

A good stock will help alot. Also try some JB boreCleaning compound with oil on a tight patch working it back and forth for several cycles.it will smooth out the bore and has tighten groups for me in the past.
