I've been working on a 700 SPS varmint for the past two months as my first ever long range rifle. Well This week I finally got to stretch its legs a little. Thursday I shot my first ever group past 100yds at a distance of 350yds(ranged through mil reticle)...I was off on my elevation by about 1MOA and estimated a zero value wind...group was just under 4".

Well today I shot at a distance of 510yds again ranged through the reticle...dead on with my elevation and needed about 2 more MOA of windage(I was reluctant to dial enough...DOH!). I was exstatic to see that my group was around 3"! I know this isn't a big deal to more experienced shooters but I am grinning from ear to ear! This was shooting 168gr Hornady Amax match factory loads.

That's solid shooting...more practice will make it easier as you get further out. Bad thing is that this is VERY VERY addicting...get used to being broke!Oh and might as well order your reloading gear now....

Nothing to be ashamed of there bud! Good shooting, especially with ammo not handloaded for your rifle. Good job.

I know how you feel. The other day I shot for the first time on the 500 yard range. I had a few tight groups (for my novice standard) with the best one being maybe 3" I was grinning too

Re: First time shooting at long range

I shot today for the first time at targets further than 300 yards and was pleased as punch.

I didn't shoot groups, but I was pinging steel at 700 yards.

I was using a new gun today and had no DOPE on it. I threw in some numbers on a ballistics app for the iPhone, dialed it in (up 4.7 mils from a 100 yard zero) and POW!

Shot one was about 2" left of the target (the wind was pretty good moving right to left. Nothing too stiff, but a good breeze nonetheless.

My spotter calls out "about 2 inches left, aim at the right edge"

POW! . . . . . . . . Ping!

Booyah! 2 shots and I was on steel at 600 yards.

After slammin' that for a few minutes in varying wind and some shitty sun (mental note: bring sun shade), I moved to the 700 yard targets.

Looked at my ballistics chart, dialed up another .7 mils and POW!

"Low. Aim just above his head"

POW!

"Just left. Aim at the right edge"

POW!

"Just left. Aim just off the right edge"

POW! . . . . . PING!

Booyah!

From there I moved to the smaller target at 700 yards. I don't think I hit it (I only took 2 shots at it before my spotter and I said "It's too cold" after having been out in sub-freeing weather for 2 or 3 hours), but I know 2 things:

1) Those two shots didn't miss by much. I was tap dancing around it a bit.

2) I know I can hit it.
