Gunsmithing Fitting Savage Model 10 on HS Precision

After a 5 month wait I finally received my Manners T5A for my Model 12 Savage LRP .260. My plan was to put the HS Precision stock that was on the LRP on my Model 10 .223, replacing the factory "tupperware" stock. After taking it to my gunsmith for that and some other work, he called to say that there is a slightly different screw spacing between the Model 12 and 10, according to him about .010 inch.

I know that there are several different hole spacings according to Savage action generations. Is there indeed supposed to be this slight difference? Anyone have any suggestions on how to make this work? I have considered getting a CDI DBM, having the HS stock inletted for that and re-drilling the aluminum bedding block on the HS stock to fit the DBM. Would this work? I sure do want to use the HS so any suggestions are welcomed. Thanks.

Re: Fitting Savage Model 10 on HS Precision

Newer short-action Savages have 4.41" action screw spacing, older ones are 4.27" spacing.

If the magwell is in the stock, its a centerfeed. If the mag is attached to the action, its a staggerfeed.

One hundreth of an inch difference though? That's just...odd.

Re: Fitting Savage Model 10 on HS Precision

From what I have read, there is a generational difference in Savage actions too, as well as a slight difference in the target actions such as on the LRP. But I agree, .010 difference is strange.

So I'm back to the question in my OP ... would the CDI bottom metal - block mod approach cure the problem and make the HS usable?

Thanks for the wisdom CP ... Can I borrow your dremel?

Never heard of that one. You might do some Google-fu and see if something comes up, or even use the hide search engine to see what happens. If its a target action then that might explain it, especially if its a 3 screw stock. Good luck, if I find something else I'll link it or let you know.

Re: Fitting Savage Model 10 on HS Precision

Interesting information from a guy on SavageShooters about my situation. He says:

"You must have a staggerfeed mod 10 where the mag box stays with the reciever when you remove it from the stock. LONGS ARE 5.062 ,SHORTS OF THE OLDER STAGGERFEED ARE 4.275 AND THE NEWER ONES ARE 4.400. iF your smith could mill the correct hole spacing and ream the stock and aluminum for a larger custom pillar and epoxy it in and fill in the void. Yes it can be done period."

I believe he is correct in that it is an older stagger feed because the mag box is blind and stays with the action. But the difference in hole spacing still has me puzzled. The difference should be .125 and not the .010 that my gunsmith says.

Re: Fitting Savage Model 10 on HS Precision

I have seen some .010 discrepancies in the Recoil Lug location, but Action Screws were always 4.40 or 4.275. And I have fooled with more than a Few.

Either Way, Not a big deal. Just mill the Front hole in the proper location, install Pillar, move on. When they first went to the "Center Feed" and no stocks were avail it was all you could do.

Re: Fitting Savage Model 10 on HS Precision

Thanks Ace. I'm starting to think the hole spacing is the 4.275 of an older staggered and my smith just told me .010 off without really measuring. I'll go by there tomorrow and see for myself, then order the proper DBM to fit. Thanks.
