My best friend was in town before Christmas, and his son had never shot precision rifle before. We spent an afternoon on dryfire and instruction, then I took him to the range. We started shooting groups, then progressed to the dot drill. At the end, I had a bunch of plastic army men and tanks glued to a board for him to shoot.

The video was taken with a Flip HD camera just held up to a Swaro spotting scope. The rifle is my Savage Mark II trainer with cheapo bulk ammo. Range was 80 yards with a gusty and swirly wind. The kid is 14.

I can't figure out how to embed the vid, so here's a link.

Looks like a great time with the little ones. Here's your video:

I like to record my shooting through my spotting scope also.....but I found it easier to attach my video camera to a tripod, then slide it up to the spotting scope eye piece (the spotting scope is on another tripod)....this allows the camera to stay perfectly still & allows you to videotape when your alone shooting....

Here is a short video I shot through my spotting scope from 700 yards.....the spotting scope was around 25x I think...

Two tripods is a great idea. I'll have to try that next time.

I chuckle and say I've whiled away many a Summer's afternoon doing precisely the same kind of 'microsniping'...

We made some 1/4-scale E & F-type steel targets to use with our .22RF trainers. Here's a video:

Re: Flip video, spotting scope and plastic army men

We did the same kind of green army men shooting at Quantico with the 40x. It was called the "situational shoot" on the schedule. It really is a lot of fun, and actually has some good training value at the same time.

Better than the Flip is the Kodak Play sport. Full 1080p HD recording vs. 720p, has HDMI out and overall better quality. And it waterproof to 10 feet!

Re: Flip video, spotting scope and plastic army men

I made a ghetto piggy back rig for my video/spotter. I just took a 1 1/2" wide piece of steel and put two slots in it as well as some holes. I treaded one hole to fit into the threaded portion of the tripod base and then used the slots to attach the spotter and video or camera together. Kind of a pain in the azz since each camera takes a different height but once I had them marked it was easy to switch back and forth. Im stuck shooting alone most of the time so this is the only real option I have if I wanna see all my hits.
