Re: Florida: Anyone up for Bradford tomorrow?

Where exactly is Bradford. Sounds like a nice long range I could get my new 308 broke in and sighted in. I'm in south florida and don't know of any nice long ranges around here.

Re: Florida: Anyone up for Bradford tomorrow?

It's east of I-75 between Gainsville and Lake City. I have never been there but looks like a nice little range! I would be down to try it out sometime, its about 2 hours north of where I live.

BAM226...The only nice range in S. Florida that I know of is Manatee Gun Range.

Re: Florida: Anyone up for Bradford tomorrow?

To be more precise on its location it's about a 15 minute drive from Starke and I want to say 1hr 15 minutes from Jax. I made it out there for qual day last Saturday. They make you qualify before issuing a card for its use so don't drive there expecting to shoot the long range unless you do it on a day they're having a qual. The qual involves nothing more that doping your rig at 600 and 800 yds to ensure you can at least get on paper.

POC is Rick Pisano and you can contact him through his web site at ruashooter.com. Rick is a nice guy who's unlikely to ever buy another Chevy LOL (long story)

If you're going to shoot there, steel is the way to go and your stands need to be somewhat tall since you're shooting from atop a sand berm shooting slightly downward. This angle makes too easy for rounds to skip the over berm if your stands are too short. That and there is a slight knoll at about 300 yds that obstructs your targets if too low. YOu can shoot from benches or prone.

As most Floridians know, mirage can be wicked and its tough to see bullet holes beyond 600 yds with even the best of spotters so shooting paper beyond 600 isn't the best idea. If you're shooting paper you can see holes easier on white than on black so white paper plates on craft paper might make a good target.

Re: Florida: Anyone up for Bradford tomorrow?

Why steel?

You don't have to shoot steel. It's just that mirage is fierce in Florida particularly when the morning steam is rising from the ground and its tough to see bullet holes no matter how good your spotter is. On a good day with a good spotter you can see them at 600 but you can forget about it at 800. The day I went down for the qual there were at least 6 spotters on the line and some were high-dollar units...no one could see squat at 800 and we had to drive down range between shooters.

If you go down for the qual you'll shoot paper and they'll have everything set up. I prefer steel because the round makes a quarter sized mark on the plate which is way easier to see than a hole on paper.

Re: Florida: Anyone up for Bradford tomorrow?

I am in Jax and will be headed down there sometime in the near future. I will have to qualify first and I have only been able to go to 200 so far at ACSR in St. Aug (and that is being set up way back on the drive) It has to be a solid hour and a half from where I live, maybe a shade more, but would be worth it just to see what my rig will do at longer distances.

I used to shoot there. Not many options at 200 yds. I used to shoot from positions in the woods when no one was there. Shooting from that road sucked. They've been saying that all these things are supposed to happen at that range but it's been a foot-dragger waiting for it and I don't think I'll renew my membership. You should try Gateway off of 103'd St...much nicer setup.

Re: Florida: Anyone up for Bradford tomorrow?

In Florida heat steel is your friend. With stiff mirage bullet holes are hard to see on paper. Besides, dosent everyone love the sound of steel getting smacked? I do!!

Bradford is a nice range.

You guys just hold on. We got a 1K range coming close t St. Augustine in the near future!!!!!

Who, what, why, when, where, how?

Re: Florida: Anyone up for Bradford tomorrow?

why=its fun to shoot 1000 yards
how=probably some brush and tree clearing, bulldoze a berm, and set up the benches.
what=1000 yard range
Where= near St. Augustine
who = who cares?
when = never seen a range get built anywhere near the time estimates. IF the rumor is "soon" that's even worse. figure a year at least.

I'm just getting into precision rifles, but would like try shooting some steel out at the Bradford range one day.....By the way, do they have steel there or do you need your own?

Given there are no options for shooting past 200 yards anywhere close I'd say its outstanding. If I had only one complaint it would be that (at least at first glance) shooting prone isn't an option if others are using the benches since you'd have to line up in the weeds in front of the bench area. I'd imagine you could try to set up between the benches on the concrete but I'm not sure if there's enough room.

I've only been there once since my initial qual trip and had the range to myself that day so there were no issues at all. It would be nice if they had target boards that could be stood up in ground fittings like they have at Gateway so those without steel have some target options. Their stands for shooting paper are tanks and appear difficult to move if you're alone. I'm making a target stand out of PVC that's easily carried so I can set up paper at 600 and plates at 800.

Overall I can't complain...shooting at 200 gets boring quick so Bradford is a breath of fresh air.

Re: Florida: Anyone up for Bradford tomorrow?

I shoot there a lot but i wanted to get your perspective. I agree with everything you said. I will talk to them about the target stands that you mentioned. Thats a good idea. I take my own steel but it would be nice if they had a few pieces permanently set up.

Check out ruashooter.com. This is the site where the matches that are shot there are announced. Consider shooting in a match. Good bunch of people willing to helpmeach other. No pretentious shooters. Matches are fun to shoot and everyone has a good time

You don't need your own targets for the qual.

Re: Florida: Anyone up for Bradford tomorrow?

You guys should e-mail Rick (ruashooter) to see if he's running a qual this Sunday. You won't need anything except ammo and I have a spare plate for 600 if steel is your issue.

Re: Florida: Anyone up for Bradford tomorrow?

I'm heading to Bradford one early sometime this long weekend.

I bought my own steal from a sponsor here.

Everyone I've met at BSF has been good people.

Re: Florida: Anyone up for Bradford tomorrow?

Come out and shoot in the match Saturday. Battleaxe, lets see that new GAP. Will be a good match for that rifle. everything is 600 yds and in this time.

Good bunch of guys shoot in these mayches. All about having fun. It would be nice to see some new faces.

Re: Florida: Anyone up for Bradford tomorrow?

Hey everyone not to hijack anyone's thread but I would like to know where everyone normally shoots, along with the possibility of meeting up with a few people to get started and have some pointers.

Thanks,
Ryan

I had an unfortunate change of plans. My truck shit a water pump the other day and I lost a whole day out of my schedule so I had to take a job this Saturday. I'm pretty pissed but nothing I can do. I had to drive this rental Chevy Traverse and I feel ...violated. I'm probably going to try to get out there on Sunday though cause I really want to shoot. I'll have my own private little match.

Thanks, Ryan

I shoot at Gateway locally off 103rd St. There's a range in St Aug but its a bit "iffy" in some departments. I drive to Bradford usually twice a month for long range work. Rumor has it that a 1K range will be opening in Hastings in a few months and I'll be camping at the gate when that place opens. A bit shorter drive than Starke.

Re: Florida: Anyone up for Bradford tomorrow?

Ok thanks BattleAxe still piecing my stuff together but should be fully operational in a couple weeks depending on when certain items ship. But when I do get it all set we should go out shooting sometime, lol I could use all the help I can get.

Re: Florida: Anyone up for Bradford tomorrow?

Battleaxe, too bad about the truck. Maybe we will see you next time. Be sure to block off your calendar for the october event. Lastmyear it was a lot of fun

Not sure if I want to make the drive every day or see if there's a motel nearby. Only way I'll miss it is if I'm bleeding through my eyes.

There's always the off chance that my Saturday gig will cancel and I can still make it this weekend but I'm not going to hold my breath.

There is a new "Sleep Inn" in Waldo that was advertised to have good rates if you shooting the event last year. On Friday (1st night of the October shoot) there is a night fire exercise. You may want to spend the night then and go home on Saturday to make the drive just once in the morning on Sunday. Thats what i may do. I am on Fleming Island so it doesnt take as long to get there as other J'ville folks.

My apologies to anyone that lives there BUT...Were the founders of that town smoking crack when deciding on a name? Was BillyBob-ville already taken? Was deliverance filmed there? Maybe this explains a town with maybe 2 miles of roadway and a police force of 15 cruisers all parked along 301 waiting to give tickets for left handed nose picking in a right handed nose picking lane.

LOL seriously...that sounds like a good plan Trovan.

Bradford is the name of the county. The town is called Graham. About 5-6 miles west of route 301, south of Starke, FL

Sounds inviting Dave. Sunday is usually best for me.
But it's too early to call.

It would be fun to set up our Barretts and see if we can bang the steel to the beat of the Marines Hymm
