fluting a barrel

hey guys,
I have a remington 22-250 bull barreled rifle that shoots amazing, but its a little on the heavy side, i had the barrel cut down to 22 inch and love it but im wondering if anyone has ever fluted a rifle after its chambered/rifled? i heard you should only flute a barrel before it is rifled but i wanted some input? a local gunsmith told me he does it all the time with no problems but i wanted some more input and also how deep could you take the fluting and still be safe?

You will probably have to throw out you load data and start over if you flute the barrel. The steel does have inharent stress that will change by removing material. Barrel manufactures all have different methods of relieving stress but I think it may be impossible to completly have a lax barrel.

you could take the fluting down from the rifling 1/8th of an inch. i dont see why it would matter if you did it after it being chambered. you dont start the flutes above the chamber in the high pressure area anyhow

You are going to have to pay someone to remove the barrel, then reinstall it. I would just invest in a new barrel that is fluted. or just cut another 4" off it.

last thread about this people seemed to think you wont lose that much weight from fluting. quite a few told me that i wouldnt get much weight reduction from chopping 6" off mine. if it shoots great, why chance it? but good luck either way, let us know what happens
