Fluting a finished barrel

Re: Fluting a finished barrel

My understanding has always been that it's generally OK to flute a cut rifled barrel, but not a button rifled (or hammer forged for that matter) barrel after it has been rifled. This is because of residual stresses that are in the barrel. I don't know if that's the gospel, but it is my understanding. In short, I wouldn't due it if you care about the way it shoots.

also be weary of how close the flutes get to the chamber, the most pressure is back there and if you are doing yourself/having someone do it after the fact, you could create weak spots, and most center fire rifles are pushing 50,000-70,000 psi. you do the math.
