i'm going to take my savage 93R17 FVSS in to get the barrel threaded and 2" chopped off to get it silencer ready. i was thinking about having it fluted while it was in. its the bull barrel that has the high luster finish with the synthetic stock. anyone ever seen any pics of one like that? i think it would look cool with the high luster and matte finished stainless flutes. good/bad idea opinions?

Re: fluting a savage 17?

Take alcohol and remove all oil from your barrel. Next take pin striping tape and put it on the barrel where you would like the flutes. Then apply an oil to the barrel that leaves a nice shine. Rem Oil is a good one for that. Next take tweezers or something small like that and remove the striping tape. Now you will see what it will look like with a nice shiny barrel and flat flutes.

Re: fluting a savage 17?

Unless you just like the way the flutes "look" on the rifle, I wouldn't go to the time/expense of having the barrel fluted. It won't offer you any weight reduction to speak of (maybe a few ounces at best...not nearly as much as cutting the length down which you are already doing), and its a .17 so unless you are REALLLY cranking the rounds through it in a short period of time, the barrel cooling/heat dissipation advantages are wasted.

Spend the money you save on ammo!

It might...it might not. There are varying schools of thought on the stresses that fluting may cause on a barrel (or "will" cause depending on which school of thought you fall into). YMMV.

No. I'm just a perfectionist.

Now only if I could apply that to my shooting...
