I'm putting together a commercial FN M98 action which I understand is the longest of the commercial Mauser actions, but I'll be shooting 7mm08 ammo and was wondering how I go about making the conversion, and is there a specific bottom metal with removable magazine for this set up, or do I just use a standard Mauser mgazine and bottom and load the rounds to the rear of the magazine? The rifle was originally set up for 30-06 so the bolt wll work as is. New barrel, new headspace, etc...I'm just wondering about feeding the hungry animal.
TIA

I am not sure what you mean by "longest commercial Mauser". All commercial Muasers are the same length, on the exterior(7 7/8" guard screw spaceing). On the interior, most are cut for 30-06 length cartridges, and then a spacer is added to the magazine to improve feeding on the shorter cartridges. You often can find "blocked" units on eBay, and Gun Broker.
When a longer cartdrige is needed, as in the 375 H&H, metal is removed from the feed ramp to allow for the length. The magazine is also lengthened in the front.
Most commercial triggergaurd/magazines are blocked at the rear. You can also get a slip in device that works( I one for my 22/250) from Numrich. It comes with a new follower, and a nylon piece to put in the magazine as a spacer. Some military units are blocked at the front.
You may not need to get a spacer or a block magazine. Try it without to see how it feeds first.

I'll follow up on your other suggestions. Thanks again.

+1,
I have built some 243's with an aluminum spacer at the rear,
it works well....

Re: FN M98 bottom metal?

3.44" would be about right for a 30-06 length cartridge. Here is a picture of the Numrich feed kit. Just a shortened plastic follower, with a shortened spring, and a plastic(delrin??) spacer.
You might consider using a short action Remington 700 follower.

Re: FN M98 bottom metal?

I was issued with sniperrifle based on a German M98K action in 7.62NATO. This rifle would almost feed empty cases. The magbox was widend by milling the box wider the length of the body of the 308 case. The 308 round would then fit perfectly "square" in the M98 mag just like they do in a G3 mag.

An old gunsmith I knew always said: "If you want a 243 in a M98 go 6mm Rem, if you want 7-08 go 7X57"
