I recently had my original SPR replaced by FN and I wanted to share its maiden trip with the hide.

Although, there hasn't been much data on the 300 WSM with the Hornady 208 AMAX. I was able to find some data from another poster here with his SPR.

I settled on H4350 powder with Remington brass. I decided I would do a ladder test from about 450 yards. My charge weights varied from 58 grains to 64 grains. I was a little worried if I would be able to feed the long AMAX's but thankfully for the large floor plate magazine on the SPR, I didn't have a problem. Since this was a new caliber to me, I used the same DOPE as one of my 308's. My reasoning was, I figured the 300 WSM would be shooting at 308 velocities at first.

I settled behind the gun, dialed in 10 MOA and launched the first pill. The chrono showed 2600 fps, and impact was 16 inches high. Obviously, the 208's are hitting harder and faster than the 308. I dialed down 3 MOA and fired the rest of the string. I had a couple of fliers, but I figured it was decent group for my first time behind a magnum. Recoil wasn't much different than the 308...more kick of course but not unmanageable.

I believe my best string was from 7,8,9,10. Number 8 was a called flier, so I think this is good range to conduct further testing from. I'm pretty happy with velocity, I was hoping for 2800 fps, and I reached that at 62 grains of H4350. I never had a sticky bolt lift so I may be able to push it further but right now I think 2800 is a good number.

All in all, I'm very happy with this SPR. Although, the charge weights varied by 6 grains, the string (with exception of the fliers) was measured at slightly more than 4 inches. I'm sure with more practice I should be able to tighten up the group a bit more.

If your in the market for a quality bolt gun, the FN SPR is good to go.

Re: FN SPR 300 WSM range report

JBomb, Im just accross the river from you. I am shooting the 208 Amax in my SPR as well. I found I could go much hotter with the 4350 and push it up to around 2950 without a problem and could have gone further but 2806 with 62.4 grains 4350 I was getting ES 6 and SD of 4 with 5 shot groups of .36 to .41 I will say BED IT it makes a huge difference and you will be happy you did.
Good luck with it
