Im getting back into the bolt gun game again after I had to get rid of my sps tact .308 earlier this year to buy my house. The spr a1 and rem 700 aac-sd are the 2 rifles that im looking at. Will be shooting 100-300 yards and using factory match ammo for now until I can get setup to reload. Ive had 3 rem 700's in the past and regret getting rid of all of them. The spr looks ready to shoot out of the box. The problem with choosing a 700 right now is parts look to be out of stock everywhere. Which would you choose in my position?

You must have never owned a SPR

Well said.

Re: FN SPR A1 vs Rem 700 AAC-SD build

Throwing a question here.. Will the A1 run right and accurate out of the box without any modifications? That alone would be worth the price of admission. The A3G is nice but I'm broke.

Yes, the only thing I am not a fan of is the 4 round mag. I had issues with mine but I believe they have fixed the problem.

Another option, if you can still find one, is the Winchester stealth. It is/was the poor man’s SPR, same action, 26” barrel… while not the same barrel contour as the SPR it is very, very close. I picked one up very lightly used and/or quite possibly unfired for around 600ish two years ago. Came with a hinged floor plate mag and dressed in a B&C varmint stock. I swapped the stock to a used A1 take off and Woosh… SPR for under a grand minus the chrome lined barrel and extreme finish. Cheaper still if you sell off the B&C for a hundred or two.

Now if I can just resist the temptation to have it cut down and parkerized.

+1 I bought my SPR A1 used and took it out the first time with Federal Gold Metal Match 168smk shot at or under .5 MOA out to 418yards(furthest I had a chance to shoot). Mine came with just a middle of the road Nikon buckmaster scope that I am going to replace with a PST soon but honestly the Nikon has performed flawlessly so far.

Mine just got some color added to it this week.

Understood. Just showing that I prefer the Winchester 70 action. Even when spending serious money.

Re: FN SPR A1 vs Rem 700 AAC-SD build

Niles is right...I had a Winchester Stealth .308, and it shot bugholes. FNH action Pre 64, controlled round feed, B&C stock. These were available from Elliot Brothers a couple years ago for about $700. Not sure if they still have any in their warehouse for sale?

Sold mine because I had too many .308's at the time.

Re: FN SPR A1 vs Rem 700 AAC-SD build

I've owned about 8 SPR rifles.......All shot .5 out the box except the last one I got(USED). I could not get it to group under 3/4" @ 100 so I was unhappy with it. After the third time out trying different loads and still 3/4"......I said"F**k it!" I called bugholes so he could send me a Rock M40 11.25 twist......That fixed my problem

. I ended up keeping two FN rifles, one being the last one I had built and another full custom FN PBR(same action as the SPR)

These are the two(Top is the custom pbr xp which is being chopped to 18")

Re: FN SPR A1 vs Rem 700 AAC-SD build

Sounds like the Winchester stealth is a good buy. One note, however, is hat of the Win70s, TSRs, PBRs and SPRs, only the SPR is trued from the factory.

My SPR indicated beautifully when I built it, and legitimately needed ZERO attention/rework to be on the money.

Re: FN SPR A1 vs Rem 700 AAC-SD build

I would go with the 700 also. The parts are out of stock right now, give them a little while for production to catch back up to the all the panickers that freaked and bought tons of stuff. The parts will be back in stock fairly soon.

Re: FN SPR A1 vs Rem 700 AAC-SD build

I was debating on these two a few months ago and went with the 700.
My options were...

A1 for about 1500

700aac-sd 650
MCM A5 from stockys adj. cheek/ LOP 2 cups and swivel for 750
PTG bottom metal w/ AI mag 180
Larue 20moa base 75
She shoots sub 1/2MOA

End up paying about the same but you can get adjustable cheek and LOP on the stock if you order it and will have a way better detachable mag system with the PTG metal/AI mags. And from my experience and what I've seen the 24in barrel on a .308 is overkill.

Just figure I'd share what I did since I was in the same boat. Both are awesome rifles!

Re: FN SPR A1 vs Rem 700 AAC-SD build

There's a vendor here that had or had the FN's in the "Commercial Sales" section for a wonderful price, and they come bedded

Stockys doesn't have anything in stock right now. Neither does redhawk or shooters discount. The vendor with the spr has the a1 in stock for 1195. If he would answer an Im or email I would order one.

Re: FN SPR A1 vs Rem 700 AAC-SD build

So im still debating lol I can order the aac-sd for $650-$700,spend another $250 give or take on a B&C stock,or spend 1195 on a spr a1. I need to order Monday so I can hopefully have everything ready by the end of the month for my vacation. Any other opinions on this? If I went the Rem 700 route I would have 200-300 more for ammo,or better optics. Right now im probably going with the falcon menace 4x-14, but if I can save some money I might go with something better.

Re: FN SPR A1 vs Rem 700 AAC-SD build

I have an SPR and an upgraded SPS tactical. If I had to choose between them I would pick with the SPR without a second thought.

Not only is the SPR better constructed, but it has had the edge in reliability and accuracy as well.
