Gunsmithing FN SPR in 223 how-to?

Re: FN SPR in 223 how-to?

I think the closest you will come to that is an FN TSR with the CRPF, or controlled round push feed action. It is similar in concept, but with less engagement.

As far as I know Winchester hasn't made a classic or CRF style action in .223.

I suppose you could TIG up an SPR bolt, machine it for a .223 bolt face, make a new extractor and fit it- then heat treat the bolt- but I am pretty sure that the benefits would not be worth the cost. There are other CRF style actions that are made in .223 like the CZ 527, or Remington 799.

Again, I think that the TSR in .223 is as close as you are going to get to a mini SPR.

The closest you can get would be a Winchester 70 Heavy Barrel Varmint. They pop up on the for sale ads now and then. Very nice accurate rifle. I have one in 22-250 and it's a tack driver.

They have blued receivers, stainless heavy barrels, and H-S Marksman stocks. Almost identical to FN SPR except they are push feed design.

Not many options, trust me I've looked into it. As mentioned if you want true CRF you've got the CZ 527, Rem 799/Zastava/Mark X mini, Sako, or Kimber. The 799/Zastava and the Sako don't have the large claw like the Kimber or 527.

Your only remaining, and most true to the original, is looking for a Pre-64 Model 70 that was originally 22 Hornet and was opened up to 222 Rem.

This is the route I'm taking, pending funds. Pre-64's that have been modified to shoot 222 pop up on GB from time to time. It's where I got mine, and at a reasonable price.

Not sure what your intentions are, but must warn you the mag box on the Sako and the 799 is quite small. The mag on the 527 isn't much bigger. If you're looking to touch lands and shoot long heavy bullets, IMO, your best bet the the PF heavy barrel Mod 70, the Kimber, or the Pre-64.
