I've been thinking about getting something I could use to do a little long rang work with. I can't justify spending 3k+ on a custom stick. I'm just looking for an out of the box gun, put on a nice scope and shoot.

The spr a1 seems to be what I'm looking for. I haven't been able to find a hole lot of info on them online, so I thought I'd ask you guys what you think.

Edited to add I have two, 1-308 & 1-300wsm. Like them both and they are excellent out of the box shooters. With their prefered hand load each has shot great groups of 5 ranging from .19" center to center to the mid .5's

I shoot the 308 to 1k often and it does not disappoint. 10" plates out to 600 dont stand a chance with some older Lake City LR ammo and staying on the 20" plates beyond that is easy out to 900, 1000 can be a challege through. Thats due to the wind, ammo and me, not the rifle.

Have one that I had rebarreled to 7WSM, then it was a lot of fun. 300WSM with out of round chamber. Couldn't get it to shoot really well. Put about 1200rnds down it. Bob with FN was good to work with but when they tested it in a solid rest at 50 yards it would shoot .5" Right at that also. Makes their standard. Most do better. I love the action. Just bought another 7WSM built on a FN SPR action. Should be here in a week or so.

I have a 2003 model, non fluted 20" A1A/.308...picked it up brand new with a Harris bipod and Leupold VX-II 4-12x40mm w/adjustable objective scope and was putting ~1/2" groups@100yards together the first time I took it out...(Federal GMM 168gr HPBT)

next thing I'll do to it is probably get some beefier rings(just have some Weaver 25mm rings on it now with the simple torx screws) and modify the bolt so I can put a bigger knob on it.

Regardless, out of the box, you really can't go wrong. I actually just picked up a used FN A2 with A4 stock in 24"/.308/non-fluted barrel and it's another great rifle.

I had an A1. Rifle was shooter for an out of the box stock gun. I recently sold to another Hide member and he is happy with it as well.

building on the FN SPR right now. 308 with a Douglas barrel and A3 stock. The action is really smooth and love the way it locks up. im going to go ahead and true it as well, but i have heard its not all that necessary in the SPR actions, but while im at it, i figure go all out.

just like others have said, i think you wont be disappointed in the rifle.

I have the A1 and like you I decided to buy an out of the box gun. The factory target supplied with the rifle has a .224 three shot group at 100 yrds. I'm very pleased with the rifle.
