Of the two which would be the better relieable pistol. I want something for defense and plinking.

FNP isnt a bad pistol. I personally dont like the ergonomics, the pistol just doesnt fit me well. I do own 2 XDM's and love them. Very familiar feel as I love 1911's and these have that feel. They also shoot very well and are extremely easy to service. My opinion.

I own both...I like both, but I prefer the XD and XDm pistols to the FNP. That has ZERO to do with the reliability or lack thereof. It has everything to do with my preferences.
MinorDamage is 110% right on!! It all comes down to personal preference and which one will better suit YOU. At a minimum, go handle both. Better yet...if you can...go shoot both. Buy based on YOU and not what anyone else tells you is the "better" or "more reliable" pistol as they both offer excellent reliability, durability, accuracy, etc., etc.

I've always had a bad taste in my mouth about the FNPs after seeing several crack their firing control group blocks and become inoperable. The XD doesn't fit my hand, but it's definitely a reliable and durable pistol at a good price.

Go to an indoor range and rent them + the S&W M&P in whatever caliber you want. I think the S&W is the best of the plastic frame guns. Go with what you shoot the best. I have owned them all, but when I shot the S&W, I had a glock, fnp, xd, and hk sale. Just my .02, JPG
