A friend of mine is having his first accurate rifle built presently. He sent me an email asking about scopes. When it goes past regular or target scopes I'm a little out of my league. See if you can give me some serious ideas for him. This is what he wrote:

"... first focal plane reticle, mil-dot, illuminated reticle, side focus, at least a 30mm tube, somewhere in the area of 4 to 16 or 20 power, 1/4 min clicks, it would be ideal if it had 4th Gen or Thermal night."

The Leupold 8.5 X 25 X 50's that I have are the closest things that I have to that. They fit everything but the lighted reticle and thermal or night vision.

Anybody got any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

Re: for a friend...

You can fit the bill with Nightforce, USO, S&B,PH, as far as the basic requirements, as for the Nightvision / Thermal.... NV go with Front clip on like PVS 22 as for thermal im not really sure. I hope he has a big budget...

Re: for a friend...

Probably the first question asked will be what his price range is? What distances he will be shooting? Caliber of his build? etc. I use a Night force 5x22x50 with a mildot retical. More and more shooters are going to mils instead of moa, but there will be a learning curve for that if he's not knowledgeable in that area. If its his first then I would tell him to jump into mil/mil. You mentioned 4th gen night vision or thermal imaging. While those are awesome pieces of equipment, they are huge dollar items. They will also require added rails and attachment points to add those on ie; PVS-24 with front mount rail. My shooting partner is using Premier scopes both in 3x15 power for his 243 and 5x25 on his 338lm. They are both mil/mil and awesome glass but very expensive ($2000+). I also have a 3.2x17 US Optics on a gap 308 that is awesome but I like the power of the night force on my 300wm for better distance. I would'nt go above 25x power for my self due to so much mirage where we shoot and more times then not I am dialed down to 18 to 20 power. Also like being able to power down to 3 or 4 power for a wider field of view when scoping out targets at unknown distances. Let us know what he is building and I'm sure model numbers and scope brands will be thrown out by the dozens.

He is having his Rem 700 30-06 accurized and fitted with a Rock 5R, 26" barrel in 30-06. Right now he has some money. But I don't feel comfortable asking how much. That's really none of my business.

Victor, since you're obviously new to the Hide, you might try the search function...

Re: for a friend...

Victor, I found a couple of Nikon tactical 2.5X10 in the classifieds. and have had them out to 1000 yards a couple of times this winter. Unless your doing really fine target work 10X is really all you need. If I can find a S&B straight 10X thats my next scope. Your welcome to check these out. 1000 yard practice starts a week from Monday. (weather permitting)

Re: for a friend...

I'll copy & paste all this to an email to him. It's his money, not mine.

Greg,
I'll make him aware of the offer. It's up to him.
