Gents, tomorrow my Remington 5R should arrive and would like to reload for it. Do you have any proven recipes you'd like to suggest? I ordered Sierra MatchKing Bullets at 168 and 175 Grain Hollow Point Boat Tail, Lapua brass, the Lee neck size dies, and a 308 trimmer. I already have WC 852, Varget, XMR 4350, and RL15 powders. Your suggestions will be appreciated.

Thanks,

Re: For my new 5R

Thanks, I saw this link but was hopping for a bit more.

I just tried five shots each of 168gr BTHP Matchkings with RL-15 @ 41gr, and Varget @ 43.6gr. I do believe that this particular rifle likes the Varget load slightly better but this is prelim data ‘cause 1) it's windy in Bama today, and 2) I didn't chronograph. Closed today's shooting seesion with 5 shots of Federal Gold Madal Match commercial ammo. Shot it well also and the zero from Varget held, I guess this thing's not picky

I can honestly report that the 5R rifling does work, after 15 shots there's next to no fouling, cleanest rifle I've ever shot. Remington did good on this one!

Re: For my new 5R

I have good results with Hornady 178 gr AMAX as well with Lapua Brass, 44.8 gr Varget, CCI BR2 primers, COAL of 2.838. I size with Redding Type S FL die using a 338 bushing. I also seat with a Redding Competition seating die. If I cant cover a 5 shot 100 yard group with a dime its my fault.

I also had good luck with the 175 SMK with 45.1 gr of Varget and a COAL of 2.810 same components and method as above.

If you havent already replaced the stock trigger a Jewell will work very well.

Re: For my new 5R

You step your 178,s out a little . ?? I seat mine at 2.800 - 2.810 . 44.8 gr Varget is a bit steamy , no ? I try to stay within the parameters of the book although obviously it must work . In a pinch I use the CCI 7.62 Military primers , had a Winchester STLR primer split , damage to the bolt face was minimal but none the less I was not happy . Have you ever tried the Lee Collet Die ?

Re: For my new 5R

You might want to measure the COAL at the ogive. My 5R came out long at 2.397" and my loaded round at 2.373 with 44.4gr varget and Nosler custom competition 168gr. I had 10 shot group about 0.6". My skills are not the best so the load should be able to produce better group I think.

Here is the last of the load work I did to get to 44.8, and 2.838 fits in the mag. It can be much longer and still work but I would not have the option of the mag. I have no pressure signs either.
