As the economy continues to collapse here in SoCal, I often wonder about the mistakes "financially" I have made in my life. Like staying in college instead of working and taking care of a family business that collapsed after a divorce. Etc. Etc. Anyways I had a younger tech bring me this into work. It may go over better if there were not so many doctors actually on the hide.

I’m a A.S.E. Master technician
In an automotive shop
I’m supposed to know the answers
From the bottom to the top

I should diagnose the problem
With just a single look
And if I fail to fix it
You think that I’m a crook

When I charge you for my labor
You scream and moan
And even call and threaten me
Upon the telephone

But technology in the auto
Is advancing every year
And for the systems I must know
I simply have no peer

I must be more electrician
Than the man who wires your home
For the wiring system in your car
Outshines the Astrodome

Then refrigeration systems
That I’m supposed to know
Have more gadgets than your home
To make the darn thing go

Electronics now have made the scene
And more are coming yet
The car models already exceed
Your television set

In hydraulics I have more to learn
Than a specialist in pumps
There are brakes and shock absorbers
To help absorb the bumps

Torque converters and transmissions
With servos, valves and gears,
With models by the hundreds
Introduced in recent years

Fuel systems of a hundred kinds
I must adjust and meter
Each far more complicated
Than your furnace or water heater

The principles of combustion
I must know from A to Z
And gear trains that will far exceed
Most all machinery

I’m in welding, I’m in plumbing
For water, vacuum, oil, and fuel,
Compared to me, a plumber
Is a kid in grammar school

There’s models, makes and systems
Some seven hundred strong
And new ones coming up each year
To help the scheme along

Now compare me to the doctor
Whose prices make mine meager
Yet folks revere his expertise
Ever more impressed and eager

The human body hasn’t changed
In twenty thousand years
And every model works the same
From the ankles to the ears

There’s years of school in his field
And almost none in mine
I’ve learned by practicing my trade
And I read what I can find

There’s new equipment and technology
And medicines for sure
But this is true in my field too
As much or even more

There’s lots of books he has to read
His procedures to define
But for every page in his field
There’s twenty-five in mine

There’s no comebacks and no wait
You pay for what you get
And come back and pay again
If he hasn’t fixed it yet

His mistakes are often buried
While mine come back for free
And he plays golf on Wednesday
While my customers hassle me

We spend millions of tax dollars
Sending kids to medical school
But if you ask for some in my field
You’re treated like a fool

Everybody has one body
But no one has more
But when it comes to autos
You may have three or four

But you’ll go right on complaining
Of the way I run my show
With no appreciation
For the things I have to know

And you’ll take your high school dropouts
And you’ll shove them off to us
And expect them to be experts
While you rant and rave and fuss

And when your car cannot be serviced
I’ll not hang my head in shame
So you’d best wake up America
And find out who’s to blame.

Re: For the auto techs out there.

My family owns and operates 4 tire and auto service centers so I can definitely relate after my time spent there. I actually just emailed it to the office because I enjoyed it and figured they would too. You can't go back and change the choices you've made so there is no point in wondering about them. Look at the present and evaluate the situation taking into consideration the past while making decsions that will effect the future. Good luck and I hope you can hang on until the economy turns around.

Re: For the auto techs out there.

People will never get it. They fail to realize that cars don't take care of themselves. They put shit off until it's too late then bitch about the bill. I realize it's the same in most fields when it comes to customers. I long ago adopted a quote from mall rats. "The customer is an Asshole!" I never treated them that way though.

Re: For the auto techs out there.

Coming from the medical world I feel your pain......

That being said I treat my truck the way I treat my body. So every morning I get two pleasant surprises. The first is when my eyes open and the 2nd is when my truck starts.....

Someday I may have to start taking care of both, even odds as to which one will crap out first.

Cheers,

Doc

Re: For the auto techs out there.

thats pretty good, i had a doctor come in to the shop and struck up a coversation one time and he made a good point. i asked why they charge so much more than i do when we both go to alot of school, but while the human body hasn't change in millions of years cars change every year. and he replied next time a car came in with a bad head gasket to try and fix it through the tailpipe while it is still running. i couldn't argue much with that.

Thanks, I was feeling sorry for myself for a minute but hey minutes up. I need to look no further than a great wife of twenty years and some real good children. I am even a new step grandfather, by choice. I have a lot to be thankful for.

Re: For the auto techs out there.

My favorite is, "You fixed my brakes last week and now my A/C doesn't work. Don't know what you did to it, but I want it repaired."

Explaining that nothing done to the brakes effects the A/C gets you a, "Oh, you expect me to believe it's a coincident?"

How true.
I have taught all the lube guys to check the oil on every single vehicle that comes in BEFORE they do the oil change to make sure there is no heavy oil in the crankcase. Had one person bring their car in for an oil change. Once done they left and came right back and said the motor was now knocking. The lube guy was asked and said it didn't make any noise but when he was done it was a little noisy. Long story short this guy has had several engines replaced all over town. He was a mechanic himself and would get motors put in customers cars and pocket the money while getting a new motor.

What about other professional Mechanics such as myself, I fix Boeing 737s for the only profitable Airline on our planet, 24 years now.

You don't get comebacks, you get comedowns.

I did work on F-4's and F-18's

Re: For the auto techs out there.

I charge $125 an hour for business IT work.
I charged a contractor $35/hr to put up with a lot of crap.

I should pursue being a full time consultant but I am a full time student right now.

But I did fix my gunsmiths computer the other day and he's fixing the sights on my M1903, good trade

I get paid by the hour not the job so I have the time ensure everything is GTG, I really don't want to go to prison, oh and I hate F-4's, dam things wouldn't let go of the boom from my KC-135

Re: For the auto techs out there.

this is a good one. im gonna hang a copy above my box as well!

i take it yall have seen the 'myth of the magic machine' thing that was being passed around on IATN a few years ago??
about the customers who come in thinking all you have to do is hook a car up to 'the machine' to miraculously 'fix' anything yet the machine is actually the auto tech's brain!

Havn't seen that yet. I have a IATN account. Do you have a link?

Re: For the auto techs out there.

The problem is you have "parts changers" who think they are mechanics, polluting our trade.

I hate having a vehicle come in after the shade tree idiot "fixed" it, yet they forget to tell you it was previously mollested.

Its like opening a jigsaw puzzle with 3 different puzzles in it and none look like the picture on the front.

I think the when it comes to parts changers this line was for those.

I usually don't mind to much when it comes to "not-fixed elsewhere first" as I don't mind saying I need more time (money) for additional diagnostic time. I always get the ones that everyone else is afraid to work on anyway. It is more of a challenge and keeps the brain functioning.

Re: For the auto techs out there.

I have an issue with a Scirocco that i bought to turn around.

Used the brain to figure it was running warm - I knew the radiator had to be replaced because it was broken and plugged wiht a screw, so now it and the fan are working but car still runs hot.

Turned out to be the fuel pump, which I suspected.

Not getting enough fuel, running lean, lean=hot.

Changed out the filter and it's not running HOT anymore but it's still sputtering after running full throttle.

So despite not being a certified mechanic, 30 years experience works for me...:)

I have had several of the VW water pumps that will spin the impeller on the pump shaft. If you pull the thermostat housing you can stick your finger in and feel the impeller if it is corroded and gone or if it is spinning. Can be a huge cause of misdiagnosis for a sometimes over heating problem
