I just sent off my Form 1 to ATF for a SBR lower...The rifle is a 10.5" Noveske Upper in 6.8mm on a LMT lower.

When doing some research on the topic it was said not to put "multi" in the caliber portion of the Form 1 and only use the one caliber which in my case would be 6.8mm. Since my paperwork from ATF will be a for a 6.8mm lower can I also use a 223 10.5 inch upper on it or do I have to get another stamp?

I read somewhere that if you can put the SBR back to the original configuration that it is OK to use multi calibers for the SBR lower.

Also, does anyone know how long Form 1 paperwork is taking these days? Is it the normal 4 months like the Form 4's?

One last question - who is doing engraving on the lowers that does a good job. I just don't relish taking it to an engraving guy to get done from a local trophy shop.

As long as you keep the upper in the configuration you registered it in, then you can swap to other uppers no problem. Just dont get rid of that 6.8 upper. It has to be able to be put back together as filled out on the paperwork

Ya 3-4 months is about standard, sometimes different depending on examiner.

I thought that is what I read when researching the SBR lower I was making. Oh no, how can I get the wife to OK the new 10.5" 223 Noveske upper? How can I sneak this one past her?

I have way too much stuff for her to ever know what I have. Not to mention I couldn't tell you how many hand bags she has and I can't tell the difference anymore than she can tell the difference in my uppers. Sounds like a good plan to me

Confusion leads to lack of give a shit. My wife use to ask questions but after longer bouts with confusing one gun for another, she is finally satisfied with not knowing anything. She looks at a black gun and sees the same ones all the time. Dont take too many out at one time and she'll never know.

    2. I've had 3 Form1s turn in ridiculous time:

...but it's all about who your examiner is and how motivated they are.

NFA Branch has a customer service number you can call to check on the status, just have your serial numbers handy and they are pretty friendly.

    3. I use These Guys

doorkicker, thanks for the link. That is exactly what I was looking for.

I have read about close to a thirty day turn around on Form 1's but I am not banking on it.

Re: Form 1 Questions and Multi Caliber Uppers for SBR

why does everyone go and gets their lower engraved? The only reason you would have to engrave is, if you started from a block of steel/aluminum and you have no markings. They want to know who is the mfg. what cal. and what city/state it was made in. Do yourself a favor and go pick up your lower and tell me if that info is on it(look at all your guns if you want)every single one has all the required engraving so your gtg.

Re: Form 1 Questions and Multi Caliber Uppers for SBR

Well, through my research this is what I came up with: I filled out the Form 1 to become the manufacturer of the lower...when I put on my name, city and state I am now the owner and manufacturer of that lower and that gets engraved on the right side (ejection port side). Am I missing something?

"The ATF requires all short barrel rifles to be engraved with the manufacturers name, city, and state"

Yes, I know about the manufacturer lowers information in the left side of the rifle as mine is a LMT and has their information on it.

that would really make my year if it came back in 30 days; however, I am deploying to Iraq in about that time frame so I guess it doesn't matter all that much anyways.

The OP is taking a Title I firearm and making the SBR, which in the eyes of the ATF is a completely new Title II firearm. The OP is the manufacturer of the new gun, and his name, city, and state must be engraved on the receiver. He can use the original manufacturer's serial number.

Re: Form 1 Questions and Multi Caliber Uppers for SBR

As the manufacturer of the lower I have to engrave my name, city and state on the lower. Thanks for all the inputs gents.
