Forming .260 from .243 brass.....

Re: Forming .260 from .243 brass.....

Yes, if the neck sizer has the expander button in it. Lube inside of neck. Pretty simple. Myself I use an expandrium mandrel in a die that came with a Sinclair neck turner kit. Then I uniform the batch to length and resize with the neck die and then load it.

Jake,

Yup, using a expander button to open up 243 brass, is one way. You could also get WW 7mm-08 brass, and neck it down without having the expander button.

This is what I plan on doing, 7-08 is easy to find and a lot cheaper than Lapua brass, if i lose some at a match to BOLTRIPPER I won't feel so Jewish.

Jake,

Midway has plenty via the Internet. Not local, but it is $204.99 for a 500 count. That's pretty cheap compared to Lapua. And the brass scroungers won't chase you around.

Or you could just buy ready made 260 Nosler Brass. At a $1 a pop, it will deplete your bank account faster than you can say 260.......And the brass hogs will love you on range day.

Brass hogs dont like me. I pick EVERY piece of brass I shoot.

So I can take the expander button off the stem and run a 7mm08 case into the die, then replace the EB to form case mouth?

Re: Forming .260 from .243 brass.....

I'm sure you do pick up every piece of brass, but in these parts those boys are fast...... they are in pickup mode before you stop shooting......

Expecially when it's those gold plated Lapua's sitting there neeked and unattended.

No, just leave your expander ball in and neck it down. Be sure to lube inside and out. I have always found necking down, a might easier than necking up, as long as the step is small. And 7mm-08 to 260 Rem is a small step.

Re: Forming .260 from .243 brass.....

Rem .260 brass is pretty good stuff; I have used it and would use it again. Right now, I neck up Win .243 brass, no discernable problems, several batches have lasted fine until the primer pockets expanded. I buy a batch each year, and reload it 7 or 8 times before the pockets get loose.

I use a F/L resize die, but I suppose a neck only die would work too, certainly well enough to be able to fireform.

243 brass you can end up getting donuts in the neck shoulder junction after a few firings.

7mm-08 wont have that trouble.

That's what I was thining. Probably wouldn't be as big of a problem if only sizing part of the neck. I would think the es problems wouldn't be an issue if the throat was big enough to allow for the doughnut.

Re: Forming .260 from .243 brass.....

Part of the shoulder on 243 becomes part of the neck on 260. Look at the diminsions between the two and this becomes apparent. I tried to use 243 Lapua but keep going back to RP 260 brass. I think I may try the 7mm 08 WW but the Remmington brass has served me well.
