Trying some loads with 140gn Berger VLD's, in a 6.5X47 Lapua....best group was with 39gn of H4350, with the VLD's just touching the lands. No pressure signs with this, but haven't chrono'd them yet, put three rounds on this group.....figured this was all that was needed!

My gun club is set up a little deferent....there's a mound for prone shooting at 100yds, then shooting tables 5yds behind that. So these were shot at 105yds.

Cool. I'm looking forward to seeing the results of your complete load development. A good 100 yard load is not necessarily a good extended range load. But if that load keeps good numbers over the chronograph and you can keep groupings like that for longer strings of fire then I'd say you have a winner.

Impressive! Can't wait to get my 6.5x47 bbl'ed action back. I started this project over two years ago....man I wish I'd have gotten on the ball quite a while ago.

I'm gonna try to chrono some rounds today.....my guess is 39.0gn might be a bit slow.

38.1 grains of H4350 and the 140 vlds does the same in my 6.5x47. I have not chrono'd it either, nor have I shot it past 100 yards. I started to get pressure signs a little past 40 grains.

I meant to write H4350 on the target.....sorry, dyslexia and beer don't mix...apparently.

Re: Found something that works! (6.5X47)

I moved the Berger VLD's .010" off the lands, to an OAL of 2.875" but kept the same 39.0gn powder charge of H4350....and fired exactly 10 rounds on one target. The rounds fed perfect from the magazine with no pressure signs. Just thought I'd share what I've developed for the inquiring minds.
    Chronograph report will arrive shortly...

Very impressive, I'll admit I'm not that good, but hope my build shoots like that, I am also waiting on my 6.5x47 from SAC. I had Dave Kiff grind me a reamer though for the 123 Amax seated high up in the neck based off of a dummy round I sent to him.

Re: Found something that works! (6.5X47)

The barrel is a Bartlein heavy contour 1-8.5 twist cut at 23."
The smith chambered it for the 139gn scenar, but the chamber seems to be just fine.

    39gn of H4350 produces a muzzle velocity of 2,670fps.
40gn's of H4350 makes 2776, but the groups opened a bit.....I went with the 39gn's. Not the velocity I was looking for but I shot at 1k tonight and it shot boringly amazing!

Here's a pic of the rifle....

Re: Found something that works! (6.5X47)

If you aren't liking your velocity, give the 130grainers a try. The JLK 130 carries a superior BC to your 139gr Scenar. The 130gr Norma and 131gr Cauterucio both right behind the JLK. I'm sure high 2800s are possible with your 23" using a 130gr.

Re: Found something that works! (6.5X47)

Thinking about a 6.5 x 47 for a hunting rifle build and wondering if I went 20" on barrel would I be making a mistake. Most shooting would be at 200 yards or less. Would like to use 123 amax or 130 accubond bullets. I have one with a 24" barrel and it shoots great just thought a 20" would be real nice.
