It's the Savage model 11 Hog Hunter in .223. It only comes in .223, .308 and .338 Win. The .223 will be perfect out of those three choices, it's a 1/9 medium heavy barrel, sights, 7.5 pounds, accutrigger and a 5/8-24 threaded barrel and the price is right. I'll paint the stock for her. A tiger strip will be cool.

Now I need glass. I've posted in the scope section as well. I'm thinking about the Bushnell 3200 10x40. It's not too big and is pretty good glass. Also the 3-9x40 Vortex Viper with BDC. But I'm open to suggestions.

Re: Found the rifle for my daughter.

i"d go with the variable over fixed 10x for hunting. I have the bushy 10x, and it's a great scope for the $$, just not my choice for this application.

Go with the Vortex. I have a 3.5-10x Viper, let my son "borrow" it for his AR and never got it back. Can't go wrong with anything "vortex".

Maybe. Savage has a .223 that runs a 1/7 but it's a big, heavy rifle. Probably could get a replacement in 1/8 or faster, but that would defeat my purpose. I'll be running 64 grain PP or 65 grain Gamekings so the 1/9 will be fine. It'll also run 55 grain stuff well to.

Re: Found the rifle for my daughter.

an 1-8 twist would be better but since it is a savage, swaping barrel won't be too difficult and there is nothing wrong with 1-9 for now.
cool stick, congrats.

Re: Found the rifle for my daughter.

The 11 Hog Hunter in 223 Rem is threaded 1/2-28, not 5/8-24 like the 308 and 338.

That barrel will shoot 75gr HPBTs VERY well with 24.0-24.5gr Varget, loaded between AR mag length and the lands, which was 2.38" OAL in my barrel. I also had moderate luck shooting 75gr A-Max through mine in the VERY limited testing I did, though to get anywhere close to the lands with that bullet you'll be single-feeding. 24.5gr Varget & 75gr A-Max @ 2.46" put 5 shots into MOA at 100yd...

If you want to swap barrels later you can easily do it, but the Hog Hunter comes with a PITA smooth barrel nut that you'll need to twist off with a pipe wrench and replace with a 'normal' slotted barrel nut.

I'd recommend the Weaver GS Tactical 3-10x40 mil/mil from Midway, Burris 1" XTR low rings and a Weaver 20MOA base.

I'd also HIGHLY recommend a stock pack, or even better, replacing the stock...the factory tupperware is junk and the comb is too low for a good cheek weld.

I've about talked myself in to getting her the .308. I have some Hornady 130 spire point, 155 Berger VLD and some Hornady 165 Spire point. Everything else is 178 or above. I think she will do fine at the range with some reduced loads. I have a PAST recoil pad she can use in warm weather.
