I have a question on variations in factory ammunition fps.
While I do reload, I picked up a box (impulse buy) of 300WM Federal Deer Thug, 180gr bonded soft point. FWIW, box says 2950 fps at muzzle.

Ran a few through a 21" barrel and the chrono came up with:
2943
2775
1013
2956

I had been testing other loads before and after this string, and the chrono was working fine.
I might even be willing to throw out the 1013 (slightly lower recoil and printed 2 inches low), but the round before was only 2775. I quit shooting this box after 4 rounds.

Is this something to contact Federal over, or just dump the powder in the remaining rounds and salvage components?

Its a chronograph error. It happens. You would know if one round was way-way under powered and I doubt that happened. 2775 is also possibly an error if you got a 1013 fps right after that.

Good to know about variations in light strength affecting readings.
Accuracy wasn't that great on the rounds fired, so won't be buying anymore.
Thanks guys
