Unfortunately today everybody is using them as handbooks for how they should do things.
Another part of it was when they pushed the new state religion of commercialism full on with non stop propaganda.
Kids these days think they need the latest $200 shoes and fashion outfits, thousands of dollars of electronics, their own rooms, the list goes on.
They are also lazy and spoiled and think the adults are their personal servants forever.
When I grew up, there was a pile of used clothes and shoes carefully stored in trunks, as you grew, you got things out of the trunks that fit you and put the stuff you didn't fit in, back in the trunk.
In addition as soon as you were old enough to walk and talk, you started with chores as a significant part of your day and caring for your siblings.
Education, Work, Play, Sleep not much time to get into trouble and the more kids there were in the family the more workers there were to take care of younger ones and teach them. You'd be surprised how well kids learn when their responsibilities include teaching what they have learned to someone younger.
The other part of that is that kids these days have their faces buried in their phones and don't know how to fucking communicate. It's why I limit the hell out of my kids electronics. But I hear you. I had a baseball bat and a GI joe doll, that s all the shit I got for Christmas. I was lucky however, the used hand me down clothes and lack of video games made me play outside all the time, I could get dirty and come home at sunset covered in grime, my mom would wash me off with a hose before I could come in the house, it was great! Kids activities have changed and them along with it. It's up to us as parents to limit the shit we feed them, and I'm not talking about food.
I wouldn’t get too worked up about it. War, Famine, Pestalence, Disease, and Death have a way of keeping things balanced, and we are way past due for famine and pestilence/disease. There hasn’t been a decent plague for ten generations. We’re due.
