It seems as though this year is an especially bad season for ticks. Lately I've been taking my dog with me into the woods for a couple of hours at a time. Seems as though I have to stop every 20 mins or so in order to brush ticks off of him.

Just the other day I must have counted at least 20-25 that I swatted off him in an hours time span. Those are just the ones I happen to catch.

Anyway, he's on Frontline Plus and their thing is that the product just KILLS ticks/fleas but does nothing to repel them. K9 Advantix on the other hand repels and kills or so they claim.

Anyone one have any experience in dealing with either one or BOTH of these products or any other product out there? Any recommendations?

Re: Frontline Plus Vs K9 Advantix

Frontline Plus worked well on my dog. Tried Advantix on vet's recommendation (and it was a little cheaper) but my dog got fleas and ticks so I switched back.

Re: Frontline Plus Vs K9 Advantix

I use frontline plus on my dog and my cats, I also tried the advantix on them per suggestion of my vet, and they too got fleas anyways, so I then switched to frontline and haven't had a problem in 3 years. Go with frontline

Re: Frontline Plus Vs K9 Advantix

I had very good luck with a product call Proticall. I googled it and it is made by Scherring Plough.

I got it from the vet.

A couple treatments will last through tick season, about a month each time.

You might see one or two ticks on the dog when it starts to wear off, but they aren't too healthy and I don't think they live.

Same active ingredient is permathrin so maybe it is the same as the others.

+1 on Revolution. Pricey but does a job for my 18 month old black lab. I've pulled ticks off me already this year but none off her. She's allergic to flea bites and we had a problem for a while. Put the cats on Revolution too and in 6 weeks the cycle was broken. Have not had a problem in 7 or 8 months

Re: Frontline Plus Vs K9 Advantix

Damn, 20-25 ticks in one outing! That sends shivers up my spine, my Son somehow contracted Lyme disease and it is a very bad thing so, I'm glad that you are all staying on top of what is a real problem. Regards

Re: Frontline Plus Vs K9 Advantix

We used Frontline IIRC until it just quit working on our Dobie. The Vet switched us to Comfortis and it works great. About the same price (they're all pretty expensive) but it's a soft chewable they think it's a treat. First dose it started working within 30min. It's been a little over a year and a half and I haven't seen a flea or a tick.

Re: Frontline Plus Vs K9 Advantix

I switched from Frontline Plus to Advantix just this month.
It is suppose to "Repel" Ticks. It doesnot!
I have picked ticks off that had actually had embedded themselves into my dog & put them into a jar to see if they would die. It has been 2 days & they are still alive!
I would like to hear from others on their opinion of this product especially the "tick" issue.
I would NOT recommend this product over Frontline!
I have not had problems with Fleas but never did with Frontline Plus either.

No they dont, the only thing i know of that will treat heartworms is Ivermectrin, you have to be VERY careful with it though in collies and shephards, I use 1% ivomec on my blue heeler and beagle/corgi mix with no ill effects, another thing about heartworms, you need to start as a puppy, if you give an old dog with heartworms ivomec it can kill them from the worms going through their system.

Re: Frontline Plus Vs K9 Advantix

You mentioned that you use Ivermectrin on your dogs
I never heard of this (haven't googled it yet) & was wondering how you acquire & administer this product.
I have used "Heartguard" on my dog from the beginning. Of course, this is a prescription product only available thru a veterian dr.

Re: Frontline Plus Vs K9 Advantix

The active ingredient for heartworms is ivermectrin, it is what we use to worm our livestock on the farm, i buy a big bottle of it at the vet clinic or wherever i can get it at a decent price. I just keep it in the fridge and once a month i give the my heeler 1/2 cc orally and my beagle/corgi 1/4cc. I can pick up a bottle big enough to treat my 14 horses in the spring and treat my dogs for a few months for around $40 iirc.

I use Revolution. It's always worked. When I first moved into this house we had to get the carpets cleaned and they prior owners had pets. The carpets didn't dry well and it made for a MASSIVE flea infestation --dog was going CRAZY and so was I. Had little red spots all over my feet and ankles, it was BAD. The Revolution worked for the dog as usual (we'd used it before) but it was this powder that I dusted the carpets with and vacuumed up that really did the trick. Forget the ingredient but it prevents the fleas from being fertile. You gotta do it a couple times as I recall but it was the silver bullet for our problem and we haven't had a flea since.

SO, I have Revolution for a 20-40lb. dog and for a 40-65lb. dog and then some for a cat. It expires next year, got it in 2016 and seldom use it. If you want some, just PM me with info and I'll send you some. I'd rather not throw it out, the stuff is expensive. I just don't use it unless they have problems.

Let me know.

Damn. NOW I see it's eight years old!!! Well, offer stands...

How in the hell did somebody dig up a 8 year old thread?

I mean, before we migrated to this really nice interface with the even nicer search function (which actually works) it was nearly impossible to find anything even if it been posted five minutes earlier. Ok, I'm exaggerating but not by much.
