I have a new savage 10 precision carbine in .223, it is one of the best shooting guns I own. It is also the most frustrating.

The rifle has 300 rounds down the tube as of this afternoon, was cleaned completely at 200 rds. I have only been shooting off a bench, sand bag in front unsupported in rear. Weaver 3x10x40 mil/mil, great scope by the way.

My problem is when I go for my first cold bore shot groups, the damn thing will not hold a group for noting, Im talking two to three inch groups, all two inches high and three left from poa.By the time I get to my third 5 shot group poi is the same as poa. The fourth group is where the money is at everything is working right, and my groups shrink down to a 1/2 inch. It does this with every brand ammo I use, I have never had a gun do this.

Any suggestions or help would be appreciated I cant figure it out for the life of me.
Thanks for the help,
Raider

Seems to me like your rifle shoots well dirty. The solution to that is clean it when only necessary, and shoot it after cleaning so it shoots well when you need it to.

It does shoot well dirty but it was doing this every cold bore group before and after I cleaned it. I had about fifty rds though it since I cleaned and I shot it today and it did the same thing, that is what is bothering me that I cannot figure out.

Any chance the barrel is not completely free floating? The Savage I bought was not free floating because it sat crooked in the stock, I had to sand a fair amount of wood in order to have it free floating like it's suppose to.

It is a little close to the left side of the foreend but I can run two stacked dollar bills underneath it all the way to the front action screw. Maybe on the sand bag im getting some pressure on the barrel

Hello neighbor to the south.

I own the exact same rifle that you do. It's a wonderful lil rifle and has sent many many coyotes to Song Dog Heaven. From what you are describing, I'm afraid the problem might be the shooter. If it consitantly starts to group well after the 3rd or 4th set of 5rnds, clean or dirty, then that points at the shooter getting "warmed up" rather than the rifle.

1.) let someone else shoot the rifle (cold)
2.) shoot another rifle that you own for 5-10 rounds and then get on the 10PC cold and see what happens.

If there was no consistency, then you could look at rifle/optic issues, but since it starts to shoot well after "x" number of rounds, then it's hard to think its the rifle. It doesn't know when to shoot bad or when to shoot good.....it just shoots.

To be honest, I have to agree with Trevor. Let someone else give it a cold bore tryout. See how it does. And yes, Savage's seem to prefer to shoot dirty. Mine certainly does...

I was starting to think the same thing that it was the shooter, just didnt really want to admit that since I did nail a coyote last Sat at 200. I'll try to find some one else to shoot it, I have been on a year long haitus from any type of shooting due to my then newborn sons extended hospital stay and selling alot of my guns and toys to pay bills. This like getting my first gun all over again.

Trevor knows of what he speaks. Try a different system to get 'warmed up' before shooting the 10. Even (or especially, a 22).

I have a 1998 LH Tactical in 260 Rem. factory gun with a heavy barrel. I clean it after every shoot and mostly shoot it in a 2-600 yard match. We shoot 5 rounds at each distance with 3 sighters at 200 yards at a tatget with a 3 inch center (we use the same target all the way back to 600). Anyway it will put the 3 sighters and the 5 at 200 in the center. I have not seen a difference from a clean cold first shot. I bought the gun used 3 years ago and have no idea how many rounds have gone through it. Maybe your gun is not broke in yet with only 300 rounds shot?

There is a thread in this same section titled coldbore vs cleanbore. This video posted in this thread talks about your problem.
