im really thinking hard about having a fte muzzle break installed on my custom rifle. one question is which tread size should i get. im hoping to move sometime to a more gun friendly state and get me a can for my 308 bolt action. is there a standard size for can threads? the muzzle dia. is .940

Re: FTE muzzle break question

You have a couple different options with the FTE brakes.

First and foremost: 5/8x24 is the most common thread pattern for .30 muzzle brakes, suppressors, etc. You can certainly find .30 cal muzzle devices in other patterns, but 5/8x24 would be what I'd go with if I were you (unless you plan on getting a .338 cal suppressor for use with other rifles, as well as sub-calibers like .308, etc., then you can go with the 3/4x24 pattern).

To install the 5/8x24 Badger FTE on your rifle, you will have to have a smith turn down the barrel (from 0.940") at the same time they do the threading/re-crowning work. Most of the smiths that frequent the Hide have probably done or are at least familiar with what needs to be done to properly machine your barrel and install the FTE brake, but conveniently, Badger provides a detailed print of the specifics on the install as seen here:

Of course this begs the question of what does the can tighten up against when you remove the FTE brake.
The shoulder diameter on a 5/8-24 model FTE is around 0.800" which does not leave you a lot of shoulder.
It would be much nicer to setup the FTE brake and bore it out to 0.875" and then turn only a 0.875" journal on the 0.900" diameter muzzle.
Then, when he removes the FTE brake to install the can, he has a better shoulder for the can to set against...
