In my neck of the woods, you called 844-1212 for the time and 936-1212 for a weather report. I think those numbers worked until the early 1980s.
True story. Whenever we went to the shopping district, our parents would drop us off and tell us to be at the pick up area at a certain time. We would have a good time, but we would stop at the pay phones up and down the street. We would check the time and by using those payphones we would know when to be at the pick up spot.
We would also "call the weather" to find out how to dress when we were going out or check for rain or snow.
Those were simpler times, but we lived through the darkness of pre-internet America only to be delivered into the hell hole that is instant access America of today.
