I visited the island of Flores a few years ago with my daughter's in-laws. Joe, (every family there has 7 or 8 Joes), my son in law's dad was born and raised there. He told me he was 13 years old before he got his first pair of shoes, every thing clothing was a hand me down, a donation from a family member who lived in the US. He did immigrate to the US (legally) and did pretty well, and raised a family.
I have a new respect for these people who carved a living out of volcanic rock.
