I posted here a few weeks ago that my bride had made some candied peppers. Some jalapeños and others in a sugar fueled elixir of joy. But, in a jar by themselves, secretly holding the potential of a male Tyrannosaurus that could breathe WWII mustard gas was a small jar of candied Carolina Reaper peppers.

Now folks know I like peppers. I eat a LOT of jalapeño and other chilies and my wife’s regular candied peppers include jalapeño, banana and pimento peppers. They’re delicious and I love them.

The small jar….

I put 2 of the small shriveled orange red orbs on my plate with some eggs and sausage this morning. I cut a small piece of the pepper and ate it with my eggs.

What happened next isn’t entirely clear. I remember the pain starting in my jaws and tongue followed by snot, tears and prayer. I was overwhelmed, over matched and over …. Just over.

To call this hot, is like calling gasoline flammable. I struggled to breathe, I couldn’t see, I was nauseated. Then in a hard to grasp point of time and space, my stomach revolted. It felt as if my stomach was being punched, stabbed, burned. Pain, serious pain in my gut had me doubled over. Was a rat gnawing at my gastrointestinal walls? Was this how it was going to end?

I found myself in the bathroom heaving, hoping the offending nightshade would come out of me and cease its assault. I am ashamed to say I lost the fight with my intestinal fortitude and my pants paid a heavy cost.

I remember when the pepper came up. I knew victory was possible now if I could hold on. My stomach was still being stabbed by what must be Reaper juices but the main offender was now out. My throat was stinging anew, the pepper fought on its way to the porcelain bowl and wasn’t giving me an inch. Tears streaming, snot hanging like a rope I looked up at my wife who was trying desperately to not guffaw and offer support to the man she respects and honors every day. She uttered “I’ll throw them out”.

Yes. Yes you will.

And by machine, humans can not even do it anymore. Now tell me how they stacked them a thousand years ago.

Not true.... Humans had the capability when coupled with unlimited time on their hands and, hey, had to eat. And the churches had the money. Craftsmen worked their entire lives (about 40 year average life span) on buildings that took hundreds of years to complete. Manpower was... manpower. Blocks move with block and tackle. Not cranes. Noone had to commute home 45 minutes or spend their time checking e-mail. Or watching TV. Or having to take their kids to Disney World.

Geology is pressure versus time. Pressure is humans chipping away. Time is measured in hundreds of years. Manpower is unlimited.

The restoration of Notre Dame, in addition, has brought together not only hundreds of the 'last remaining' craftsmen of this type. But it has created apprentices, tradesmen, revived skills and done an amazing job of bringing back much of the handwork that went into these amazing buildings. Now these people are 'fanning out' around the world with the skills to restore (and rebuild and build) treasures that folks still say "How did they do that." And they benefit from sawmills, cranes, laser levels, cement mixers and all kinds of things that had to be done... the hard way.

There are several good YouTube videos/documentaries of a project in France where they have rebuilt/built a castle using only Dark Ages/Medieval methods. I think it's complete now. It was a living history project to start (historians and PhD's) then morphed into more of a trade school and finally a tourist attraction and sort of a 'reality show' on the BBC and French TV. It's quite brilliant seeing how they figured out the 'methods' and then replicated them. Then taught them.

I can tell you from my first experiences building cannon carriages starting about 10 - 12 years ago... that I learned more about artillery and the GENIUS of the cannon makers than I ever imagined. Seeing the engineering of a Civil War carriage was seeing 500 years of 'Trial and Error' and 'pure genius' put to work to make carriages that could take the shock and pounding of artillery fire. These were amazingly-engineered pieces and represented the high-water mark of the wood artillery carriage... all of them being obsolete within a few years and replaced by the screw-breech iron carriage and hydraulic recoil systems of the 1880's. Reverse engineering blueprints and the dozens of originals I examined were like a lightbulb going off. One that said "These people were geniuses!"

Cheers,

Sirhr

Send them to me. I want to try this ride.

I have become engrossed in shoe and boot making videos. Repairs, resoles, new shoes, restoration and polishing…. Not even sure why but I love videos like this.

JK Boots is one of the 4 main PNW boot companies that famously make smoke jumping, fire fighting and logging industry boots. They still make nail down boots in the $6-800 range but recently began making this stitch down construction general work boot called the 300 series at just under $400.

I found out years ago, boots matter and Walmart or Dicks isn’t the place to get boots that will last and feel like an extension of your feet.

Still made by hand and very high quality for a different use using less intensive techniques. I will be buying a pair of these.

Back 12 years ago (seems like just yesterday), my fellow Military History Class were all working on topics for our Theses... And in a fit of despair at not being able to come up with a topic, I wrote up a few "Things that we would NOT be allowed to use for our thesis topics. That started to make the rounds as everyone kicked in a few.

So we ended up with this list of "Topics that are forbidden for our Masters Thesis." I forgot about it. But it's actually pretty funny in retrospect:

Nothing like a pair of quality leather boots. Been wearing White's boots for many years now and my everyday work boots several of which have been rebuilt several times.

Nice collection. I had a pair in Montana that had little spikes coming out of the soles. Corks IIRC. You could really stick to a tree. Now I find RedWings are enough. The made in America ones are great, comfortable the day you put them on.

Those

look a lot like Nick’s Boots. Totally worth the cheddar.
Nick’s, White’s, Wesco and JK are the big players in “PNW boots”.

Whites and Wesco by far the oldest. Wesco has an aprox 14 month waiting list 😳. JK was started by an immigrant who absolutely loves the USA.

Heritage collection Red Wings are really nice boots and affordable. Machine made but great quality.
