GAP Build Help

Hello All, I need help with a GAP Build. First, I have a 308 in HS PRecision HTR that is a 1/2 MOA rifle. With that, should I go for another 308 with GAP or do the 338? I can only shoot one at a time. Regarding the GAP I need help as I want to do this right.
1. Stock? I am 6'6" Tall. What stock is the best to fit me and the most rugged? McMillan? Manners? AI?
2. Which Barrel? How long? Is there a sacrifice in accuracy by going less than 24 inches? Twist? I want to go out to 1,000. Flutes or no Flutes?
3. Muzzle Break? Which one?
4. Action? What is the best one for extreme accuracy? I will probably mount a Mark 4 or a Nightforce on it.
5. Trigger? Jewell?
6. What other components am I missing? Trigger Guard? Bolt Knob?

Again, I want to do this right and there are a million options that GAP has. I have my HS Precision which is a fine rifle but GAP is the crown jewel. How long would this build take and what do they ask for as far as down payment, etc? Thanks for your help.

You're asking for other people to join you in looking at the catalog. Stop catalog shopping. Your time would be better spent learning for yourself the answers to the questions you asked. If you already own a 1/2 MOA rifle you have what you need. Go shoot it until you know what you need to change. Then you'll be ready to buy something different.

Take the money and instead of buying another rifle invest it in a basic precision rifle course. The course will answer many of your questions, and change the rest of them.

First of all welcome to The Hide. Your question is commonly asked by many on here. Use the search function to look up answers to some of your questions.

I would say search and see what others are shooting. Look at build purpose, weight, length of barrels, action brands, type of ammuntion used and then make your decision.

And the search function won't answer unqualified general questions like what stock best fits him [fit is not determined by the stock], which Barrel to buy [there are probably thousands of combinations], whether there a 'sacrifice in accuracy' at less than 24 inches [from what/for what], barrel twist [with what bullets for what purpose], and which action is the 'best for extreme accuracy' [accuracy isn't determined by the action].

I'm not being rude, I'm being helpful: The answers he seeks will be useless to him without a better understanding of what is behind the questions he is asking.

I was not asking anybody to "look at the catalog". And I dont need to "catalog shop" as I have researched everything from building my own on a 700 action all the way up to having GAP build me one and everything in between (HS Precision). The purpose of these forums is to ask people who have FIRST HAND experience with a particular situation,rifle, or rifle component what their thoughts were on it, whether technical or a product recomendation. Thus the part recomendations I was inquiring about. One person may like their Templar action, another may like Surgeon. A case for one over the other is simply what I was looking for. Nothing is better than first hand knowlege. However, I dont have the funds to buy every component on GAP's menu to try for myself, although I have researched virtually everything out there. Example: Some say flutes help with Barrel Cooling, others say it takes the rigidity away from the barrel. Some say Manners stocks are the best because you can drive a semi over them, others say McMillans are the most proven. First hand experience is why this forum is so important. And I have taken 3 Precision shooting courses here in Phoenix.

Graham, forget I proposed the questions. Sorry for apparently being stupid.

PS. I would argue all else being equal, a Surgeon action would be more accurate than a stock 700 Remington Action. I would also say a question on whether going less than 24 inches sacrifices accuracy, versus say one that is 24 inches, with these types of barrels (bartlein, etc) is not a dumb question. Especially if I wanted to go to 1,000. I can go on and on but I wont.

Flutes reduce weight. Some people have the mistaken idea that fluting increases the stiffness of a barrel, but a fluted barrel of a given weight and length will be stiffer than an unfluted barrel of the same weight. The larger surface area of a fluted barrel dissipates heat, but so what? Flutes also lower a barrel's moment of inertia but not by enough to make any difference.

However, if all else is equal there are other factors that probably matter more.

And, theoretically, shorter barrels are more accurate.

Just call GAP and order a Hospitaller with adjustable length of pull....pretty nice package right there.

Long barrels wont give you anymore accuracy....maybe a little more velocity. Plenty of guys on here go to 1000 and beyond with 18 and 20" tubes with their .308's.

I shoot 4 different Surgeon actions and also shoot 2 Templars as of late as well as a 2 or 3 Remington 700's. They all shoot great. Anything the GAP crew puts together for you will work.
