I've had recommendations on both pinned and non-pinned gas blocks so I thought I'd look for some experience here on the pros/cons. I want a durable setup but would like to be able to swap parts myself. Thanks for your help....

What's the saying? "There is no free lunch."

If it's for duty/hard use, the gas block should be pinned in some form.

I have had the clamp style gas blocks and set screws come loose over time with some builds. I pin everything now. Pins aren't hard to get out if you have the right tools...unless they're factory Colt.

Most of my low profile gas blocks are not pinned. I have the barrel dimpled and the set screws set with Rocksett. With that said, they are covered up by a longer rail. Anything exposed will get pinned.

Re: Gas Block - Pinned vs. non-pinned w/ locktight

The low profile ones I have as mentioned above have set screws on the bottom with a dimple on the barrel.
I do use some loctite but more for a seal than to keep it in place.
I put red on once and had to get it back off 'cause I wanted to put it in another upper ~ I had to heat it, and pound it and even had to cut off the gas tube (waste of $15) to get it off.
I kinda ease up on the loctite now days but sure better than having to drill 'em out as I did on a CMMG fixed F Gas block once.
It all depends on how tight it is on the git-go (tech term for beginning).
I usually refinish my barrels first so it makes them tighter to begin with (aka git-go).
I always dry fit first but have no problem and even prefer the set-screw types.
YMMV

Re: Gas Block - Pinned vs. non-pinned w/ locktight

I had the gunsmith use Rocksett instead of red thread locker. From what I've read, someone correct me if I'm wrong, Rocksett has a high resistance to heat but can break free with nominal torque. It's not like standard tread locker where it really holds onto the screw.
With regular shooting the gas block should seal up anyway with carbon.
