I know the gold standard for 1000 yd shooting is the cistom bolt gun in various calibers. I just want to know who if anyone is shooting gas guns (AR M14) regularly at 1000. I do it and enjoy it. I like my M14 NM and am working on my DPMS style to bounce the steel.

Re: Gas guns at 1000

My buddy and I have used our DPMS 260's to hit steel at 1k repeatedly with 123 Amax's. I have not tried with my AR15 yet but I think I can do it when I get a chance.

Re: Gas guns at 1000

Your M14NM will do it. Choose 175 Sierras (magazine length of 2.80) or 185 Berger VLDs (can seat out to 0.005 short of the leade, and load single shot). You will have to load them hot, and with low SDs. Agree with the concept of "high efficiency" cartridges tailored for the task, but the old war horses can still do it.

Re: Gas guns at 1000

I've shot M14/M1As at 1000 yards for about 30 years now with good sucess.

However, now I'm joining the band wagon and switching to the AR (223) for 1000 yards service rifle.

we do need to work on this some more and find out but the next time I can bring my 308 SASS with the 178 AMAX and see how that works

From Different's M1A site:

March 2008 - Demonstration M21A5/C-IED rifle test fired at Fort Benning, GA. It grouped just under 1 MOA at 1000 yards using M118LR ammunition.
Except for the LRB Arms M14SA receiver, this rifle is the same as the M21A5/C-IED rifles in use by the U. S. Army in Iraq. Photo courtesy of Smith Enterprise, Inc.

The TACOM M14EBR-RI has reportedly racked up kills just over 1000 yards.

Depends on time period and ammo availability, I shot for the Natioal Guard. Started using M118 (173s) Then Mexican Matched this load pulling the 173s and replacing w/ (the older) 180 SMKs. I stole this ideal from the AMU when I was in their sniper school in '78. Later we got M852 and mexican matched these by pulling the 168s and stuffing in the 180. If there was an ammo shortage we reloaded using the standard 41.5 grns 4895, fed match primers LC brass, using 168s for across the course and 180s for 1000 yards. The old SMK 180s are not the same 180SMKs of today, they are like the 175s.

Like I said I joined the AR band wagon, in my White Oak, I use 80 SMKs pushed by 24.5 Grns of R-15 in Winchester brass.

Gas guns (M14/M1As) do shoot at 1000 yards. One year we were squaded next to the AMU Rifle team at 29 Palms. They shot service rifle (M14s) and shot 799/800. (the poor kid who droped a point caught hell). They were shooting M118 with SMK 180s that day.

As a side unrelated side note: If you want to pick up some great pointers, volenteer to score for the AMU Rifle team. Get as close a possible to their coach, and PAY ATTENTION, you'll learn a lot.

Re: Gas guns at 1000

My go-to AR Service Rifle long range load is:

Win case
Rem 7 1/2 primer
24.9 grs VV N140 (chrono'd the same over 3 different powder lots)
Berger 75 VLD seated .020"->.030" into the lands of a Wylde chamber
Krieger or Wilson 1 in 7 twist barrel

I've shot this load in 120+ degree heat and it has been safe in 4 different barrels. Brass still reusable. It hammers.

We'll have several sling, coat, and irons AR-15 Service Rifle shooters tomorrow at a Palma match I'm putting on. 800 shoots like a slightly long 600; 900 starts to get dicey, and 1k is interesting to put it mildly. But, the rifle will do it with a good load.

As the saying goes, the longest 100 yards on the rifle range is between the 900 and 1000 yard firing lines.

Doubters should come watch; believers, come SHOOT.

Rifle looks like any other M16A2 or A4 as it must; Palma rifle on top for comparison.

Re: Gas guns at 1000

I've got an LRB M-25 that I want to run out to 1000.
I've had it out to 700 so far with good results. The load I've beeen using is a 168 SMK @ 2575 fps. With the Leupold 3.5 X 10 that's on the rifle now I run out of elevation with this load at about 700yds.
So I've been working up a load that shoots the 168gr AMAX @ 2700 fps and have a 2.5 X10 Nightforce on the way.

Re: Gas guns at 1000

I've shot at Perry with my M14 I was just wondering how many guys are pushing their AR .308 platforms. I saw the Army and the MC shoot Perry at 1000 using their M16's.

I know the M14 will do the job one I built for the 42nd ID in 2004 got a kill at 960yds on the Syrian border.

JSTARZ got my RHA 3/8 IPSC plates today. My contact is going to work on 3-4 1" IPSC plates. I should be ready to shoot 600 soon.

Re: Gas guns at 1000

I occasionally shoot 1000 yards with a 260 gasser.
One time with my 223 service rifle, and it did surprisingly well.
I have one 260 load that can hold 1 moa the whole way.
Load development is more tedious, but once you find a consistent one, the pay-off is nice.
I run a 20" DPMS style rifle, and with that load it should be good to 1200 yards, although I have yet to take it that far as my home range only goes to 1k.

I have a 308 gasser with a 18.5" barrel that is good to 900 yards.
It actually seems to shoot the tightest groups out at distance.

1000 yards seems more of a status symbol than anything else.
If you're at home at 600 yards, have good ballistic data out to your calculated maximum range (around say: 1200 ft/sec), have a descent, repeatable scope, and know how to use it properly, 1k is no more difficult, save for the wind.

Wind is sooooooooo important, and dominant, that it virtually makes all guns equal, whether they are 1/4 moa tack drivers, or 1 moa gas guns.

The differences at the target would be negligible unless the driver were absolutely exceptional, or the winds exceptionally light.

Re: Gas guns at 1000

155 Scenar, 45gr IMR 4895, Win brass, CCI BR2 gets me out to 1100 yards with a 24" T barrel.

Did you really post a pic on SH with you using a Barska, or did I accidentally go to AR15.com?

Re: Gas guns at 1000

I was shooting last night after work: 5600asl,80 deg, 2 to 3 mph winds.
20 inch Kreiger in custom build I put together. 155g Sierra 2156, 45.5 g Varget, 2825 fps. Put first round on 2moa steel at 1200 yds, then 4 out of 5 after that. Build is DMPS style with Iron Ridge upper and lower. Nothing wrong with a little luck now and then.

What's the twist rate and barrel length of your White Oak - 1:7?
